Arkansas Coach Gus Malzahn Says ” I’m Houston Nutt’s Puppet”

2006 November 7
by Jai Eugene

Gus Malzahn is a semi-successful SEC Offensive Coordinator. And by Coordinator, I mean he shakes a lot of hands and does a lot of standing around holding a clipboard. So much so in fact, that his players call him “The Puppet”. I didn’t know what that meant exactly until after the interview. I couldn’t resist sitting down with Gus, an Author, a Videographer, a master strategist and tactician to pick his brain. Two questions into the interview, I was already regretting my decision.

El brujo:

You’ve made a quite name for yourself in the High School Football world. What has made you so successful?
Gus: I make it a point to be a knowledgeable observer of a dynamic sport and I try to stay focused in this competitive landscape.

El brujo:

Not sure what that means, but ok. What do you think is the most important thing for a high school coach to make the transition to such a key and pivotal position in the uber-competetive SEC Conference?

Gus:

A dynamic coach must be able to harness their human capital to nurture a high performance winning culture. Without reactive synergy, they’re dead in the water. At Arkansas, most of all, an offensive coordinator is better seen and not heard. Coach Nutt has asked me to keep my mouth shut and really just stay the hell outta of the way. He is afraid that I am going to hurt myself or worse, hurt a player.

El brujo:

Of course he has. Watching you on the sidelines, one can see that you just might be in over your head. In your opinion Gus, what makes a good leader?

Gus:

I think that I am a good leader. I can see the 360 degree view at all times and always find the critical path to outpace the quagmire of sea of change. Do you think it shows that I am clueless during the game? I virtually have no input into the game preparations and Coach Nutt acts like he doesn’t hear or see me.

El brujo:

I don’t think you answered my question. Maybe you did. Whatever it really doesn’t matter. Tell me how do you approach recruiting and coaching?

Gus:

Easy. I just leverage Arkansas’s core competencies to productize our talents. The Mustain Recruitment was my best and only effort thus far. But, how could I screw that one up, the kid was my quarterback after all? Coach Nutt really felt not even I could not screw the pooch on that. Sure Mitch got a bit antsy because the Tebow kid was getting all of the publicity, and really it came down to my personal relationship with Mitch that kept him home. I will say that I was nervous; Coach Nutt threatened to fire me when Mustain started looking around but his trust in my ability left me feeling all warm and glowing on the inside, you know like the Purina High Pro Glow?

El brujo:

Productize isn’t a real word.

Gus:

It is now. But we can circle back to that later. It’ll be a win-win action item for both of us. As an example, Houston Nutt needed my quarterback, Mustain. So, he hires me as his coordinator and I give him Mustain. Win-Win. Sure, I don’t do much, but I move around, carry this play chart (looking over his “chart” I realized that it contained his Ipod music playlists) and flash gang signs at the players and nobody is the wiser that I have no idea of what I am doing.

(Notice the first song on his playlist?)

El brujo:

I would remind you that I am running this interview – GUS. Now, how has technology changed the way that you coach?

Gus:

Technology is a shifting paradigm. Without scalable, cross-functional deliverables, most schools find themselves in the hot seat. Technology is mission critical. Just look at my highly successful Offensive Philosophy: Hurry Up No Huddle Beta and VHS Videos; I think I sold over 150 tapes the last 5 years. (Based on Gus’s uncertain employment “situation”, We linked his books and video from Amazon.com)

El brujo:

Does that mean you think it’s important?

Gus:

Soup to nuts psychographic peer review. Did you get it? The Soup to Nuts? Houston’s Nutts?

El brujo:
Fuck yeah, I got it you fucking simpleton. It was a yes or no question. Here is one you can answer: Is it normal to find your cousin attractive?

Gus:
That’s an out of the box proposition that will generate buzz and find the right influencers for my coaching services after Mustain graduates. I am afraid that after Mitch leaves Arkansas, Coach Nutt is going shit-can my ass. And the cousin thing? If she’s hot? Absolutely.

El brujo:

Now you’re just saying words.

Gus:

Core operating initiatives are right sizing executive planning alternatives.

El brujo:

Godammit! Just answer one fucking question with a real answer! You can’t, can you?!! YES or NO. Just try it.

Gus:

Thank you for onboarding me to dialogue with you. It was an impactful bio-break.

El brujo:

GRRRR. Goodbye.

Mustain is a winner, man. he lays it on the line every saturday. just give gus time. he’ll overcome all this adversity and have us right back where we belong, on top! i think all them folks calling in to try to get rid of houston are just a bunch ofhorns who are scared of gus. everybody knows with a daddy like his, he’s got to be a great coach.

just think how many championships we’ll have by then if he’s still here and continues our climb upward to the top of the college football world.

hey if Houston Nutt is gay does that mean they can play in the toss the salad bowl? i think that’s about as close as they will get to a bowl game this year. even the weedeater bowl seems like a slim possibility at this point. in fact maybe they should start a new bowl in Little Rock and call it the Springdale bowl sponsored by Gus’s old school. The pigs can play Hoover High school. that should be a good match up. they may have a tough time selling out so they could sell advertising on the back of their jerseys. i’m sure McFadden can get chico’s bail bonds to put their logo on the backs of their jerseys.

    Mama knows best
In a news release in December, the mother of Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain – Beck Campbell – yielded to Razorbacks coach Houston Nutt’s authority when it came to coaching the team.

“It was agreed by all parties involved that the head coach has the valid right to determine the direction of the program and the manner in which the team would develop,” she said in the statement.

    What brought about this concession?

Less than a week after Arkansas wrapped a 10-win season with an appearance in the SEC Championship Game, parents of three Razorbacks freshmen apparently weren’t satisfied.

So if gus goes to a major college and is the OC for a natl championship team, and if Williams and Mustain dominate at USC (like they have this entire past year on the scout team), will anyone regret that we let a natl championship group slip through our fingers? it’s ok, it’s entertainment so we should want to win and have the best players. I’m looked at bad now for being glad Nutt is gone and I looked bad to some of you when i kept crying for matt jones to never play qb and get at the wr position. You know, have a future NFL first round draft pick wr at an unheard of 6′6″ running a 4.4 40yrd dash with next to perfect hands and moves. And at the same time to have our former bench warming razorback qb who could’ve broken hog records with his rocket arm and great speed. The guy who is now an nfl starting qb for the Minnesota Vikings. But we ran that guy off to a pathetic conference where he could dominate weak athletes like himself right? Don’t forget us running away Mr. Jackson and also Mr. Cherry. Cherry who also went on to play back up qb in the nfl though never seeing the field at Arkansas.
That’s what we’re talking about with Mediocrity. Winning 8 or 9 games in a season, loosing sec championships, never going to bcs bowls, when we could’ve/should’ve/would’ve won a national championship(s) and at least 2 sec championships with the caliber of players we had recruited. Says nothing about Houston being a bad man, just says that he didn’t play the best at the best positions. Good luck to Houston at Ole Miss, but everyone just needs to sit down, shut up and watch bobby petrino win an sec championship and eventually a natl championship. can you imagine our razorbacks going to a bcs game? get ready because petrino doesn’t need to plant a tree, it will happen quickly. look at his recruiting this year. He started so late and already has the qb from Michigan transferring to Arkansas (who by the way was the #2 qb recruit in the nation behind some kid from Springdale the same year. What was his name? That kid who only wanted to be a razorback since he was 6 years old growing up in NW Arkansas watching the razorbacks every single fb game just like you and me as kids with our families. Didn’t he dream of wearing a razorback jersey that had his favorite number 16? Man, I had a dream once he came to Arkansas and went 8-0 as a true freshman in the SEC. But I know that was just a dream because we would never bench a true freshman who had a flawless record. I also dreamt that we let some guy go for $1000 more bucks a year to a school where he led a team this year to be the #1 offense in all of Div I football. I even dreamt he was at the university of arkansas and our staff refused to let him call plays any longer after he dominated the #2 Auburn tigers with his amazing calls. Then in the dream all of these people started saying that his play calling style wouldn’t work with our great running backs even though he designed some offensive set for a guy named Darren McFadden. It was scary, but again I know it was just a dream because the hogwild offense was not made by Gus for McFadden but rather used for McFadden later. The truth is Gus Malzahn at Springdale Highschool had some blue chip athlete called D. Williams that would run the same offensive set lining up at qb. the same set that made dmac even more famous and successful. Of course there’s nothing wrong with a coach using another coach’s play as long as credit is given where credit is due).
Well, now those former homegrown AR boys are on their way to success away from the university that they once loved so much. They were like prophets rejected in their hometown to us die-hard hog fans. Well, good luck razorback fans who wish you were still in the state and wish you were appreciated for your abilities. May your countless successes be great although you don’t get to fulfill your dreams at the university of your initial choice.

    sincerely,
    Mr. Wayne Gordon

Smile people. even when you have to eat your humble pie. because in the end you are and will always be a hog fan. Even when USC dominates with our players.
