We all know that the NCAA is nothing but a bunch of whiney bureaucrats trying to pretend they care about keeping amateur athletics amateur. All the while lining their own pockets on the hard work and sweat of the athletes they feign protection of. But let me give credit where credit is due, at least they are consistent in their idiocy.
The latest example comes via Ian Johnson, the Boise St. running back that proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on national TV after upsetting the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. According to this story, neither Johnson and his family nor his fiancee and her family can accept free or discounted services not available to the general public. Now I can understand stopping people from giving the couple an envelope with $1000 in it for a “wedding gift”, but if some nice Idahoan (did I just offend the Rutgers womyn’s b-ball team?)wants to give the couple one of the 38 toaster ovens that they’ll likely receive, then what’s the harm.
I guess Johnson will have to crochet his own comforter and bed skirt.

Heaven forbid the NCAA look into Reggie Bush’s family living rent free in a phat house or the obvious lack of control the Florida program is in.

Should the NCAA be able to set artificial limits on scholarships given to student-athletes? Should they be able to deny scholarship renewals for any reason including staffing changes and injuries? I work with attorneys who believe NCAA engages in illegal practices that puts profound financial pressure on college athletes. If you are a student-athlete at a NCAA-affiliated university and had your scholarship terminated, please visit hbsslaw.com/ncaa-antitrust for more information.
How and the hell can the NCAA Dictate that Pryor or Tressel cannot make $$ till they serve an NCAA penalty? Is this not collusion between the NCAA and the NFL?
