Can we please get a confirmation or a denial regarding this rumor that the “Harvard of the Deep South” plans on using a real elephant as a mascot this year?
We at LWS realize that this is a ridiculous rumor and if were any school other than BAMA we would dismiss it.
But I have to be honest with you…..after Logan Young “falling down the stairs” (wink wink), the woman who got a DUI on horseback, the shocking video of Saban’s arrival in Tuscaloosa, and 92,000 people attending a scrimmage…………………..well, you just never know do ya?
Your post was the first I’d heard of it, and I live in Tuscaloosa and attend grad school there part-time. As I wrote, I just don’t see how it would even be possible. There’s no place on campus where they could keep an elephant, and the nearest place would be the zoo in Birmingham.
But then today, the Tuscaloosa News reported that they’re looking at expanding the stadium again, a year after the last expansion was finished. I suppose they could add an elephant habitat. PETA would go insane, or more insane, which would be a bonus.

This definitely has some marketing potential here. You could have a guy in a tarzan cloth ride it out with a houndstooth hat on, maybe throw in a tarzan yell!
