How good will Brady Quinn be?

Today’s article in the New York Times about the influence that Notre Dame head coach (and college football’s residing king of the snotsicle) Charlie Weis had in the Browns trading up to take Quinn in the first round of April’s draft has me wondering: What kind of NFL quarterback will Brady Quinn be?

Now in the interest of full disclosure, I’m not a Notre Dame fan (that may be putting it lightly, that’s like saying a vegan and card-carrying PETA member isn’t a real big fan of veal) and I certainly was no fan of Quinn’s tenure at Notre Dame but I can’t help but think this kid will be a quality NFL starter. But as is the case with so many rookie quarterbacks his success will be largely circumstantial. Look at a player like Ben Roethlisberger. Though he won a Super Bowl as a rookie, you can’t believe that he’s a better quarterback than Phillip Rivers and/or Eli Manning (the latter of the two is certainly open for discussion). But he was drafted by a team that was a couple of players away from being a great team. The Browns aren’t like that. The Browns are many good players (particularly on defense) from being a great team or even a playoff threat. To put it plainly, Brady Quinn will only be as good as the Cleveland Browns. If the line can afford him time in the pocket and Braylon Edwards stops simply acting like a premiere wide-out and starts playing like one, you would have to imagine that Quinn’s experience in Weis’ pro-style offense is going to afford him some success.

The word out of Browns’ minicamp was that Quinn was lackluster but come on, we’re talkin’ about minicamp. Minicamp? We’re talkin’ about minicamp (sorry I couldn’t resist an AI reference). I think Quinn will beat out former Zip Charlie Frye and flavor of the month and former Beaver Derek Anderson to become the Browns starter. If Quinn plays within the system, the Browns offense could be interesting to watch. I don’t think this team has a snowball’s chance of making it to the playoffs giving how stacked that division is but the storylines are certainly intriguing.

Put your biases aside (and if I can do it, any one can) and answer the following question: How good will Brady Quinn be in ‘07 and how many games will the Browns win?

Look, he’s already making a choking motion toward his throat. This will not end well.

One thing Brades has going for him: there aren’t very many big games in the NFL regular season.

One thing Brades has going against him: the large, angry and athletic men on defense that want to be the first to injure him.

Cue happy feet in the pocket and eventual fetal position in the locker room.

Brady Quinn will amount to a mediocre NFL quarterback at best-Quinn has absolutely no upside.

Yall are going soft on me.

Roethlisberger won a superbowl in his 2nd year, not his rookie year. And Roethlisberger is way way way way way way way way way way way way better then Eli Manning and Philip Rivers. Sorry
Altough I’m pretty sure Quinn will be succesful as a NFL Quarterback
