Faris is my maiden name. I thought I would include it in case some of my friends from UA happened to see this page and my post.
Thank you for asking.
Don’t pay any attention to the negatives. Alabama is a great school and a great team. It isn’t nor should it be all about winning all of the time. There is so much more to life than that. Make fun all you want. There are more “losers” then there are “winners” and they change places all of the time.
Everytime I see that catch Otis Nixon made I wonder why it’s not talked about that much. That has to be one of the greatest catches of all time. How high was the fence at Fulton-County? 10ft according to this web site http://www.ballparktour.com/Former_Atlanta.html.
The timing required to make that catch and get to that ball is amazing. See kids, sometimes being a crack head is a good thing. All of those great teams and we only got 1 stinkin’ world series championship.
Weightlifting for baseball was still in it’s infancy for baseball in the late 1980s and early 90s. Matter of fact, pitchers were mostly forbidden from going heavy with weights for fear it would mess with their flexibility. Ron Gant was really the only Atlanta Brave that worked hard in the weightroom.
The outlook on weight training changed a lot in the 1990’s. Once guys started to notice improvement with weight training, the natural progression for cheaters is to take steroids to be even stronger. Lots of guys went that route and many didn’t. I think Canseco and McGwire popularized weight training in baseball and also popularized juice in baseball as well.
In the early/mid 90’s when I was in high school, we used to look at team pictures of our high school team from the 1970’s and 80’s and talk about how much skinner they were back then. I have several buddies that coach high school football now and they always talk about how much bigger and stronger kids are now than they were when we played 15 years ago. 99% of these kids aren’t on the juice either as they test for it twice a season. The bulk gain is due to the fact that kids now play 1 sport and train for that 1 sport all year.
As easy as it is to dismiss the growth in today’s athletes to steroids and HGH, I think the average increases are from the improvements in weight training, diet, and legal supplements. Guys like Bonds, McGwire, Giambi, Canseco, Caminiti, etc. got addicted to the growth and the on-field results and got crazy with it, reportedly.
If I were making a list of guys that definately did not do steroids I would start with Greg Maddux, Sid Bream, and Mark Lemke. Oh and Lonnie “big butt” Smith.
I remember Lemke was getting interviewed on TBS during a season when Blauser ended up hitting like 15 or 16 HRs (a lot for Blauser), Lemke said something along the lines of, “I don’t know why everyone is making a big deal about Blauser’s power numbers. There have been seasons when I have hit at least 5 HRs.”
Yeah, definitely no ‘roids, or probably even weight lifting involved with those guys.

Why do all of the players look so much smaller and thinner in the video?
