Kirk Herbstreit: ‘I Was an Idiot’; Yes you are but for a different reason than being wrong about Florida

We disagree with GatorCountry.com’s assertion that you should apologize to the Gator Nation for picking against Florida in the BCS National Championship Game. In fact, we think you should give the Gator Nation a hearty “Hi-Ho FUCK YOU” instead. We agreed with the your analysis: I simply felt that the difficulty of the schedule would eventually catch up to a team playing in the best conference in college football and struggling most of the year to get into rhythm-especially offensively . [AOL Fanhouse]

Who could have guessed that Herban Meyer would use a fast and loose suspension policy that allowed proven dope smokers like Jarvis Moss and Marcus Thomas to continue to play in key games and be suspended for cupcake games? In fact, a Jarvis Moss blocked field goal against South Carolina because his vertical leap increased by 18″ because of his ganja-intake saved the Gators season. Can you imagine the Gators’ season if Moss had played for a coach that actually paid attention to our great nation’s laws?

Here is why we think that you are an idiot Kirk, we think that over the years that you have morphed into a flagrant Big 10 Homer. You are unable or unwilling to put your Big 10 bias in a box and stop acting like Lou Holtz. Acting like Lou Hotlz? Holtz, as most know (and if you don’t know he will remind you) coached at South Carolina and Notre Dame. He famously picks those 2 teams to win each week regardless of their opponent. God forbid if there is ever a Cock-Irish game because there will be a rip in the fabric of the universe. The point is Kirk, that your temper tantrum of Florida being chosen over Michigan was unbecoming. I really thought that there were times that you were going to cry. Even if you were right, you needed to nut-up and move along.

Last season, Saurian Sagacity pointed out that Herbstreit was in next to last place among picking college football winners heads up. The only pundit Herbstreit beat out for better predictions? Collegefootballnews.com’s Clucko the Chicken, who makes picks based on selecting between two feed bowls that represent the two teams playing in a given game. (Seriously!)

The year was 1999 and I was down in Jacksonville for the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party. ESPN College Gameday was there that year too. We went to meet some friends at the hotel they were staying at and guess who we see reading a paper in the lobby? Kirk Herbstriet. Just sitting there reading the paper taking in the early morning vibe in the lobby.

We stopped to say “hey” and he put his paper down and started to BS with us like he’d been waiting for us all morning. I though, “man, he’s one cool dude” to be sitting here talking to us about the game and the other games going on in the country. He then goes on about talk about how this was his 1st trip to J’ville for the WLODCP and how amazing the environment was. He said it “felt like the Super Bowl”. He talked about how no one and he stressed “no one”, else in the nation does college football like it’s done in the SEC. The traditions, the tail gating, the passion, and the hot ass women. He rallied on the women of the SEC for at least a solid minute, even stopping the conversation to take notice of passing hotties, “look at her. You just don’t see that any other place and it’s all over the place down here. Every SEC town we go to. It’s unbelievable!”

He had to head off, but we talked for a solid 15 minutes before he left. I still like the dude, but, professionally, something happened. Somewhere along the way he’s forgotten what it’s like in the SEC or, more likely, his company has directed it’s employees to promote their products (Pac10, ACC, Big10, Big12, Big East) more than their competitor’s (CBS and the SEC). Understandably, ESPN is not as unbiased as it used to be. They’ve got a product to sell and it ultimately does them little good to promote a match up that’s going to be on CBS.

Like I said before, I think Herbie’s recent jock sniff for UF is more back door support for the Suckeyes than to show love for the gators. If he pumps the Gators up, then maybe it can save the Big-10’s BCS bowl embarrassments last year.

Marcus Thomas was kicked of the team in November 2006, and did not play in the Vandy, S. Carolina, FSU, SEC championship, or National championship. We was permanently removed and not allowed to work with or practice with the team or coaches. While his teammates were collecting rings he was sitting on the couch. And went from a first rounder to 121st overall pick. I think the punishment was pretty severe, he was given a second chance early in the season and blew it.
