SI’s Mandel attacks The Great Battle Captain….Fulmer

First ESPN hates Tennessee, now it is Sports Illustrated. When will the nationwide conspiracy be stopped????

Thanks for the story Big Orange Lawyer!!!

College football ain’t John Wooden era basketball, folks. I love how Coach Fulmer is supposed to win it EVERY YEAR, and then the people that the nay sayers compare him to changes every couple of years dependant on who’s winning at the time. Right now it’s Urban Herban Meyer (oh, Urban Herban Meyer “owns” Fulmer), a couple of years ago it was Mark Richt (because they had a good season), before that Nick Saban and before that Spurrier. Of that group only Coach Spurrier has comparable numbers against comparable competition over a comparable period! And look at what he is doing now that he is in “comparable” (if not better) recruiting ground.

If you want to convince me that Fulmer should go, then rip off 10 or 15 coaches (even 5) who’ve done more over a 15 year period (even 10 years for that matter) and who would want to come coach at Tennessee for the 15 to 20 years. Then I’ll at least concede that you have a reasonable argument.

In my opinion the “fans” who call for Coach Fulmer and staff firings after every lose, “under impressive win”, and none championship season are just fair weather fans . . . at best. He mentioned Tuberville and Meyer as “tacticians”? They’re tacticians they way Orgeron is a tactician. he also loses a lot of credibility by claiming that we have a ton of talent on the roster. Here is the link [Dick]
As a side note, does anyone have a great winning percentage against teams that finished in the top 10? I doubt it, b/c top-10 teams don’t lose. That seems like a pretty bogus argument.

I think we have a couple things at work. First is lazy journalism…one guy writes about 1998 and top 10 teams and blah blah blah and everyone jumps on board without doing any real research or objective analysis. That’s why teams like SC and Bama get more media attention and follow it up with zero important wins.

Second is that folks have generally become numb to our sustained winning. 2005 is the obvious exception, but 8+ wins every year but one since 1989? We’ve averaged (averaged!) like 9.2 wins annually the last 15 years. That is amazing, and is generally underappreciated.

Third, and this ties in to lazy journalism…lazy, bad fans. There opinion is what the pundits tell them what to think, and right now they’re being told to be mad as hell about the program and that everyone but us is winning (which we know is a total falsehood).

Last Friday night, I was sitting in the backseat of a cab with the windows rolled down when a dude in a convertible pulled up next to me blasting that song Hey there, Delilah. It’s been stuck in my head for five straight days since. The good news is, it’s soft, melodious and not nearly as annoying as Outkast’s Hey Ya!, which, you may recall, got stuck in the heads of the entire American population for a good two months in the winter of 2004.

You know what else will get stuck in your head if you’re not careful? Rocky Top. I defy anyone to attend a Tennessee sporting event and not come away humming that thing for the next week. You don’t even need to remember the words, just the last line (“Good old, Rocky Top … Rocky Top, Tennessee”) and maybe that weird part about telephone bills.

So how are things on ol’ Rocky Top these days, anyway? Apparently, not as idyllic as one might imagine.

In your opinion, what is the main reason why Tennessee is barely mentioned anymore nationally? They are not considered as a favorite to even when their division. And you did not include the UF-Tennessee matchup as one of your 10 most important games as it has been in the past, even though they have played some good ones lately. Is it that you believe the present coaching staff simply cannot get it done?
– Gerald Woods, Tampa

Do you think if Phillip Fulmer does not get the Vols to a BCS bowl this year Tennessee would look bad for giving him the boot? Here’s a guy who year in and year out has some of the best recruits in the country come in only to churn out mediocre seasons (with the exception of 1998). Some people tend to think that his one and only national championship has given him a free ride for the rest of his life. The guy had a freaking losing season two years ago with a preseason No. 3 squad!!!! What gives?
–Josh Johnston, Virginia Beach, Va.

So you want to give Big Phil the boot, do you? I guess that means they’ll have to take down that street they named after him (Philip Fulmer Way). And explain why they’re firing one of the five winningest active coaches in the country (only Pete Carroll, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops and Mark Richt have a higher percentage among guys with at least five years experience).

But both Gerald and Josh have valid points. While the Vols remain a regular top-20 program, the fact is they’re not as nationally relevant as they were a decade ago. They haven’t won an SEC championship since 1998, haven’t played in a BCS bowl since ’99 and haven’t seriously contended for the national title since 2001. In the five seasons since, they’ve posted a combined record of 42-21 — not too shabby by any means but certainly a step down from their 54-8 run from 1995 to ’99.

Without question, the trademark of Fulmer’s 15-year tenure in Knoxville has been recruiting. The Vols do it as well as anyone, not only dominating their own state but luring big-time talent from as far away as California. Many of their biggest stars over the years — from Peyton Manning (Louisiana) to Jamal Lewis (Georgia) to Peerless Price (Ohio) to Donte Stallworth (California) — have come from outside of Tennessee. Based on the recruiting rankings, that juggernaut seems to be continuing today. According to Rivals.com, two of the Vols’ past three classes have ranked in the top five nationally.

But even the best recruiters occasionally make mistakes, and Fulmer would be the first to tell you the program got sloppy a few years ago, recruiting some questionable characters who not only flamed out on the field but also created off-field distractions and poisoned the locker room. They contributed heavily to the 5-6 disaster in 2005. But I also think Fulmer and his staff have been exposed a bit as coaches ever since the SEC playing field got leveled a bit. The Vols may still be recruiting blue-chippers, but so too are Florida, LSU, Georgia and Auburn. I don’t think any football observer would ever single out Fulmer as a world-class game coach. It’s not like you watch a Vols game and go, “Oh, yeah, that was a signature Fulmer move.” So is it any wonder that when the talent is mostly even, Fulmer has struggled against more renowned tacticians like Steve Spurrier (4-8), Richt (2-4), Tommy Tuberville (1-3 since Tuberville got to Auburn) and Meyer (0-2)?

This year’s Vols certainly look promising on paper, but Tennessee is one of those teams that always looks good on paper because it’s never hurting for talent. Is it fair for Tennessee fans to expect a return to the BCS sooner than later? Absolutely. But I’ll tell you this much — with Meyer, Richt and Spurrier in his own division and Nick Saban now on the Vols’ schedule every year at Alabama, it’s not going to get any easier for Fulmer.

  1. “If you want to convince me that Fulmer should go, then rip off 10 or 15 coaches (even 5) who’ve done more over a 15 year period (even 10 years for that matter) and who would want to come coach at Tennessee for the 15 to 20 years. Yeah that last sentence lost me. No one wants to coach Tennessee for 15 hours much less 15 years.

  2. Lame excuse from just the facts ma’am.

Please tell us how living in the past helps a coach and his team to win the present and future.

How many SEC Championships has Phil Fulmer coached teams won in the past 8 seasons?

  3. What about the great Kilmer? Love that guy.

  4. It’s one thing to get nine wins a season.

But when the three losses come at the hands of teams like LSU, Auburn, UF, UGA, SC, sometimes Arky, and when you can’t get your own goddamn team fired up enough to show up for a bowl game, you’ve got problems.

  5. Dude, Fulmer is the best recruiter in the SEC, and a damn good coach. If Tennessee fires him, they deserve nothing but mediocrity.

They should win the SEC east this year. Tennessee is the only team in the SEC that doesn’t love it’s cupcakes. They always play a tough schedule. They have 9 legitimate games this year against tough competition
    – cal
    – southern miss (if you put bama on there as a tough game you have to add southern miss)
    – Florida
    – Ga
    – Bama
    – Arkansas
    – Vandy (they’ll be better this year)
    – Kentucky (rafael little and andre woodson are nothing to sneeze at).

Georgia, Bama, Florida only plays 7 tough games, my LSU tigers and Arkansas only play 6 tough games.

If you want to rub one out and congratulate yourself on an undefeated season, go play in the WAC or something. THIS IS DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!

  6. Purpleheart, you are dead on!

IFart and Boo, you bring up nice points, but you fail to address the question? If not Phil, then who? I would think the coaching merry-go-round of Bama would have taught the entire college football world that you only have a good old southern Coach Lynching if you have the next to be hung in line behind him.

  7. Vandy “They’ll be better this year”

Every off season those words make me smile.

  8. mark it down: Ole Miss-Uk in atlanta

  9. Dip shits, you Fulmer-fluffers need to get up off of your knees and wipe your chins off. You continue to bring the same old weak-sister comeback argument to the table….”if not Phil, who then?”

There are a lot oof bright and energetic coaches all over this country that can out-coach Phil Fulmer under the table. You may not know about them or who they are because you do not look at the players they coach and how well they have schooled their position players or corrdinated their schemes. Fulmer recruits well, but he does not develop them. These younger briight coaches can recruit and coach.

You guys need to stop being fucking cowards and come out from underneath the rocks you have been hiding under. We are already experiencing mediocrity under Phil Fulmer for the past 8 years.

Now go back to getting tea-bagged.

  10. look here motherfucker, you had 2 count them 2 florida references in that comment: Fluffer and Teabag

    That is all

  11. Are you tired of our team getting it up the keister from Herban?

if not, continue nibbling on his nads and taking his facials.

    Damn Fulmer-fluffers.

  12. Does Herban have nads? I always pictured him more as a Ken Doll

  13. Fuckin eh, if I’m anything I’m a Miles homer, not a Fulmer guy. I stand by my argument. Tennessee actually schedules some tough games, and it’s hard enough in the SEC. By the way Tennessee has been the SEC East champs more times in the last 10 years than Florida. In fact, they’ve been the SEC East champs more times in the last 6 years than Florida.

I would love to see the gaytors schedule a real division 1 football opponent. To paraphrase my boy Dan Hawkins was talking about Herban when he said:

I got some letters……from some athletic directors around the league….there were some complaints about rumors schedule was gonna be a little more difficult than the gators are used to.That it was gonna take…..a little more preparation then the gators are used to….Western Kentucky? Troy? THIS AIN’T INTERMURALS! IT’S DIVISION I-A FOOTBALL! IT’S THE SEC!!!! You wanna play Florida Atlantic, go play intermurals brotha!

    **drops mic, walks away…..

  14. Wow. Such hate for Florida on this blog. You guys are so jealous…..I feel bad for you, I really do.

  15. #14, if you are replying about comment 13, that guy is an LSU fan. LSU that got jobbed in Gunsville w/some home cooking refs.

I have noticed that this blog seems to hate everyone. I suspect that Florida is a big target because of all of the arrests and generally stupid thug behavior

  16. Who wouldn’t want to coach Tennessee? Large salary, homers that will defend you to the end, no expectations of championships?

  17. no expectations of championships?

Not anymore, maybe once upon a time….

  18. I suspect that Florida is a big target because of our recent championship rings.

    Also that is ring(s)…plural, bitches.

  19. I can only speak from the LWS side: It is the suspensions/crimes/arrests without national media scrutiny makes my crotch itch. The rings are fine by me….but as I said before the Marcus Thomas thing (s) is what has me spun up

  20. Well LSU got jobbed in florida from player execution as well — they just didn’t play up to their potential. Every team has issues with the law, it’s a matter of whether the information becomes public or not. It’s not fair to scrutinize one team. Do you think USC or Michigan are completely clean? C’mon man…….

Yeah how jealous was I before the championship when Urban Meyer was brought to tears after the LSU game.

  21. PurpleHeart:

“Tennessee is the only team in the SEC that doesn’t love it’s cupcakes.” -and- “They always play a tough schedule.”

Everyone in the SEC plays a tough schedule. Just because UT scheduled Cal for a home-and-home doesn’t mean that theirs is tougher all of the sudden. And Southern Miss is a good team – UF played them last year.

10 of Florida’s opponents last year went to Bowl Games. UF plays the same exact SEC East Schedule as UT every year plus we play FSU. I know they had a down year last year, but they’re still FSU and it’s a rivalry game where anything can happen.

While I don’t exactly agree with Foley scheduling games against the likes of Troy or FIU, I understand. What exactly is he supposed to do? This is the SEC – the toughest conference in the land and right now probably the toughest its ever been!

Teams in the PAC-10, ACC, Big 12, Big 10, etc., can afford to setup at least 1 big non-conference matchup every year because they already face the cupcakes in their own conference. But that’s not how it works in the SEC.

  22. i am trying work up a schedule post for next week. One that will unite the SEC over the b-list bcs schools
