West Virginia’s Sorry Ass Schedule: Somewhere between raising hell and amazing grace

(Above, some tourists in West Virginia drinking beer)
You can all argue to the end of time with WVU fans about their schedule. They will consistently argue that the BE was 5-0 in bowls, that the OOC schedule just rips ass. Frankly, I show that their OOC schedule is nothing more than a “fartstopper”. They will argue the aggregate numbers but when you extricate the fartstopper it just stinks. Let’s do some of that stat analysis.
(In fact they will come here and leave comments and posts about how much we suck and that we are all queer and all sorts of other weird shit. It is amazing to watch Mountaineer fans make asses of themselves. Proving that the movie the Hills Have Eyes does apply to Morgantown)
WVU — Preseason #8
Date/Team/PS119/Last yr. Record
9-1/H Western Michigan/58/8-5
9-8/@ Marshall/81/5-7 (Go Herd!!!)
9-22/H East Carolina/65/7-6
9-28/@ South Florida/33/9-4
10-6/@ Syracuse/87/4-8
10-20/H Mississippi St./92/3-9
10-27/@ Rutgers/13/11-2
11-8/H Louisville/2/12-1 (C-USA reject)
11-17/@ Cincinnati/37/8-5
11-24/H Connecticut/85/4-8
12-1/H Pittsburgh/61/6-6
These numbers give WVU’s opponents as a whole the average of 54 in the preseason 119 and an average of a 7-5 record. That would be like playing Miami (FL), who is the #54 in the Pre Season 119, every game of the season. They also had a 7-6 record, which makes the average almost completely correct.
Also, splitting up the schedule into Home and Away games, the home schedule is slightly weaker than the away schedule.
Home Schedule
Team/PP119
WMU / 58
ECU / 65
MSU / 92
LOU / 2
CON / 85
PIT / 61
Average PP119 – 61 (Pittsburgh)
Away Schedule
MAR / 81
UMD / 29
USF / 33
SYR / 87
RUT / 13
CIN / 37
Average PP119 – 47 (Washington St.)
According to collegefootballpolls.com, WVU’s schedule is the 56th strongest in the nation, which is just barely the top half of all college football teams. That gives them the 18th strongest schedule of the top 25, beating out Boise St., Louisville, TCU, BYU, Auburn, Hawaii, and Boston College. Among those 7, only 3 are considered “major” teams, and WVU is the only one considered a national contender.
In my opinion, something needs to be done with the schedule if WVU ever wants to be in the national championship and even more importantly have fans from other conferences respect them. I suggest two things:
1. WVU needs to kiss some ACC or SEC ass to get into one of those conferences. With a strengthened conference schedule the blue and gold’s stock will go way up with the BCS. We all know that the Big East is a weak conference, but the losses with Louisville, Rutgers, and South Florida wouldn’t be as great as the gains of say Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia (SEC East). What will happen is that WVU will become a bottom feeder in the SEC, like they were in the BE before the real football schools left for the ACC.
2. So, the Eers should rework the out of conference schedule. They should keep Marshall and Maryland, but drop Western Michigan, ECU, and Mississippi State for some better competition. Minus Maryland, those 5 teams are mediocre at best. This is the best scenario, that way they can stay the big fish in the little pond.

The 5-0 BE bowl record last year is a little jaded…
It included wins over East Carolina, Western Mich., K-State, G-Tech, and Wake…
Of which only Wake ended up in the post season ranked…
But…
WVU did beat UGA two seasons ago…
For whatever that’s worth two seasons later…
5-0 is 5-0. Did the SEC do that? Nope. Kiss my ass SEC homers. I consider myself married to WVU Football, ’til death do us part’. High 5s all around
Does anyone see the irony in a backwater hillbilly calling SEC fans homers? I guess to you it’s not gay if it’s YOUR dog. You make it that much easier to take your chick while you and your buddies are off in a corner participating in a circlejerk dreaming about getting taken from behind by Slaton an White. With a schedule and a mindset like that, it’s a wonder why you aren’t in the NC spotlight every year. Fans like you are delusional to believe that your schedule is strong enough to compete with actual football teams. Are you really convinced that your backfield could outrun, LSU, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama? I know you’re going to run, everyone in the stadium knows your going to run. Douche
AngryEer:
That’s because the SEC played tougher, “ranked” teams from Major Conferences. And the SEC was also 2-0 in the BCS last year with dual 41-14 blowouts.
Here, I’ll save you the time of posting your next comment:
“We beat Georgia by 3 in the Sugar Bowl 2 years ago! I’m married to my cousi… I mean WVU football!”
LL
Are you a bigot? That stereotype of cousins marrying cousins is almost like racial profiling. Oh snap!!
Jmuthaf’nT? I can’t even pronouce that? WTF? Can you spell that phonetically?
LL
You are obviously not enamored with WVU. That UGA loss to my EErs was not Richt’s fault, it was the fault(s) of the players, assistant coaches, mopeds, previous head coaches and especially the refs. Feel better?
Here is the textbook answer to the Bowl Record (Thanks Jon K)
Let’s review the Big East’s stellar 2006/2007 5 and 0 bowl record:
_ UL beats Wake Forest in the most unattractive BCS bowl games to date. The worst Orange Bowl for as long anyone can remember. When Orange Bowl officials found out who they got for their premier game, a collective, “awww, shiiiaaatttt…” leaked from the board room.
- The cute Rutgers story of the year put them in the Texas Bowl against Big 12 (7-6) powerhouse, Kansas State. Rutgers, the Big East runner-up, wins 37 – 10. Aww. It’s their 1st ever bowl win in 137 seasons played. How cute.
- WVU, the big east #3, sneaks into the Gator Bowl and “destroys” GT 38-35. Ironically, that’s the same score they “destroyed” UGA with. “Destroy” is taught in WV public schools as a term to describe winning by any margin. WVU fans will not say that South Florida “destroyed” the mountaineers 24-19 in Morgantown, but, whatever.
- Now here’s where the big games start. Big East #4, South Florida, faces the juggernaut East Carolina from C-USA. This was a game for the ages with South Florida winning the Papa John’s Bowl 24-7. Papa John’s gave both conferences $100,000 worth of liquid garlic butter and those mini end tables used to keep the pizza box from being brushed into the cheese.
- Cincinnati (8-5), Big East #5, played the scrappy Western Michigan Broncos in Toronto in the International Bowl. I actually watched this whole game. I don’t know why, other than I must have been sick and the batteries on the remote must have been dead. Ironically, this was a good game. Kinda like how you can go to a high school football game and see a good game. Cincinnati came out to a 24-0 lead and eventually won the contest 27-24. Now that’s football.
So, the Big East’s 2006/7 bowl opponents were Wake Forest, GT, Kansas State, East Carolina, and Western Michigan. Wake Forest is the only team in the bunch to finish ranked in the top 30 with an 18 in the AP poll and 17 in the Coaches poll.
Why say all of that? I don’t know, really. Big East fans will never agree that their conference is inferior, so not only do I waste time watching Cincinnati in the International Bowl, but I wasted time reasearching Big East Bowl games to author a reply post on loserwithsocks.
You know how they have classifications in high school football? A, AA, AAA, AAAA, AAAAA? The Big East is AA. Every year a AA team will beat a AAAA or AAAAA team in football. They cheer and get all happy and say they can compete, but everyone knows they don’t have the depth or the ability to compete with the big boys every week. One game here and there? Sure, but WVU or UL isn’t escaping the SEC schedule with less than 3 losses during their best year.
I used to like WVU, but it’s tough to give them kudos now.
AngryEer:
1995 called and said that they wanted the term “Oh Snap” back.
He is trying so hard to fit in LL.
I don’t see any Big10 or SEC teams begging to play WVU. Auburn comes to Morgantown next year. We’ll see what Auburn thinks of the backfield that set bowl records against Georgia.
You dumbfucks from Eer-ville. Why would an SEC team play WVU and drop their SOS?
You know Angry I thrash West Virginia on my blog and you never comment. Why is that?
“You dumbfucks from Eer-ville. Why would an SEC team play WVU and drop their SOS?”
Nice one.
THE LARK IS A SPAMMER AND NOTHING MORE!
A HOMOSEXUAL FUCK FACE!
@13 What took so long? and who is the lark?

- Eerfan
No matter what the outcome of that game is with Auburn’s new quarterback in ‘08, the Big East is still NES Tecmo Bowl to the SEC X360 Madden. T-Ball with 2 good teams surrounded by a bunch of crushed sams cola can teams.
Crazy Fast…We’ll Beat Your Ass
Florida/Tennessee..You’ve Just Been Punk’d
Speed Kills
My Running Back Can Outrun Your Running Back
The Big East isn’t as quality as the SEC from top to bottom? Well shit, I had no idea. Guess I should have been reading these ebays all along.
If I were an SEC guy, I’d bitch more about the PAC-10 than the BE. The PAC-10 was ranked as the toughest conference in football last year.
For comparison: Tennessee 2007 opponent avg. SL 119 ranking: 47. Including a few dandies: Arkansas St (92), Mississippi St. (95), La.-Lafayette (93). (Gets at least a 1 point boost in average from Florida still being listed as #1 in the SL119, which, by the way, may undermine the credibility of the SL119.)
From Sports Illustrated, who ranked the 2007 Mountaineer schedule as 21st toughest (yeah, surprised me, too):
“Why they’re No. 21: Big East bashers might argue that West Virginia only has to play a couple of tough games all year, but the Mountaineers’ schedule suggests otherwise. West Virginia didn’t schedule any Division I-AA foes and faces three nonconference games against teams that went to bowls last season. That includes a Thursday night nonconference road game with a Maryland team that went 9-4 in ‘06. West Virginia does get Louisville at home this year, but the Mountaineers also must travel to South Florida and Rutgers. South Florida won at West Virginia last year in one of the season’s biggest upsets, while Rutgers lost to the Mountaineers in triple overtime.”
Linky: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/ncaa/06/19/schedules.top25/4.html
Despite the 4 or so completely unrelated paragraphs, the point is, if there is one, schedules are what they are. If WVU is one of three undefeated teams at the end of the season, we’ll probably get left out. Whether said exclusion is justified based upon relative strength of schedule is an argument ad infinitum. If WVU loses a game, we’re out. If WVU is the only or one of two remaining undefeated teams, the quality of the team will thence be proven on January 7th schedule notwithstanding.
Jon, I wouldn’t even call then NES Tecmo Bowl. They’re more like 10-yard fight. At least most of the offenses remind me of that…
Auburn comes to Morgantown next year huh??? Pat White will still be inaccurate, Steve Slayton will be the starting tailback for the Cleveland Browns (Oakland will draft McFadden #1), and that “vaunted” 3-3-5 that can’t stop the run as it is will be “destroyed” (WVU’s favorite word) by the three stud RB’s that Auburn has and a battle tested O-Line…
Oh, and I’ll admit that South Florida’s defensive ends destroyed us single… er, double-handedly in that game last year. It was a sad one to watch. Defensively, we had no excuse either, because I think maybe they’ve seen USF’s offensive scheme somewhere else – just maybe.
I hate to bust on the state, being a resident and all, but not a native, so I have some perspective, anyway… There’s not a lot going on in the Mountain State. I hate living there. So when their beloved Mountaineers win games like the ones against Georgia and Georgia Tech, its real easy for us to focus on the first and third quarters, respectively, and
final scorethat we won, but conveniently forget the rest.3-3-5 rush defense, since the issue was raised:
2006: 9th against the run permitting only 87.75 yards/game.
2005: 13th against the run permitting only 99.3 yards/game.
Even considering the aforementioned deficit in quality opponents, WVU is still reasonably sound against the run.
See, we suck against the pass. Big time.
If you’re going to make fun, at least get your facts right.
The PAC-10 was ranked the toughest conference last year? Where did you get that from? And didn’t Tennessee crush Cal last year? I noticed on Si toughest schedules, that 5 of the top 10 toughest schedules belong to the SEC. I would say wow, but it’s an every year occurance.
“In Jeff Sagarin’s weekly computer rankings, the Pac-10 is ahead of the vaunted Southeastern Conference.”
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/pac10/2006-10-24-pac-10-update_x.htm
My comment was made in jest in an apparently failed attempt at mocking the computer rankings. The SEC is the toughest conference to play in and anyone who says otherwise is delusional. But lack of inclusion in the mighty SEC does not preclude a team from being good. It only subjects them to the same tired strength of schedule and “they’d be a bottom feeder in the SEC” arguments.
To add to the anticipated Sagarin trashing, here’s what it spit out at the end of last season:
1 SOUTHEASTERN (A) = 81.60 81.23 ( 1) 12
2 BIG EAST (A) = 79.57 79.90 ( 2) 8
3 PAC-10 (A) = 78.78 79.15 ( 3) 10
4 ATLANTIC COAST(A) = 75.49 73.79 ( 6) 12
5 BIG TEN (A) = 74.89 75.62 ( 4) 11
6 BIG 12 (A) = 74.34 74.01 ( 5) 12
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc06.htm
Sorry, Option Spread. I almost forgot Brian Brohm lit up the 3-3-5 defense. But if I’m not mistaken, the theory being that 5 DB’s interchangeable on the field all the time should also protect against the pass???
the 3-3-5 will be a wall. Loserville got lucky
Well, that’s the theory at least. We seem to be either a little short on talent in the defensive backfield or a little short on coach confidence in the defensive backfield. Having watched the DBs closely last season, they all played huge cushions. It would appear we played a “don’t get burnt deep” defensive strategy (we still got burnt deep). So we got burnt on 7 yard posts and 10 yard outs all season long. And 7 yard posts and 10 yard outs, well, that’s exactly what Brohm likes to throw. We brought in some new talent this season, so we shall have to wait and see whether it actually makes any improvements.
Oh, and Brohm isn’t the only guy. WVU got lit up for 300+ passing yards in like its last 5 or 6 games.
Stop acting like a Marshal Poser and manup. This is our year. i call on all true Eer fans to stay the course and keep rolling!
Angry Ear, do you really think your wet dream backfield will be there behind your thinning ranks of Trickett trained O-linemen in 2008 when Auburn rolls to town?
Damn, you really are delusional…
Coach Rod’s football acumen is so complex that, Why would I psycho-analyze this match-up of how Coach Rod will attack the vaunted AU defense which will undoubtly confuse people?
Dude…
You’re losing it…
That last post didn’t even make sense…
I guess the mere mention of Slaton & White heading for the next level sends you into brain diarrhea…
Not to mention what it does to your bowels…
I know that a degree from Florida is not all that great, for obvious reasons. That is exactly why I chose not to psycho-analyze a WVU-AU matchup. You would have become lost in the Coach Rod’s strategy. I will tell you this, we will do better against AU than Florida did…
Since when is a road game a Maryland considered tough? Are you fucking kidding me? A (barely) 50,000 seat “stadium” at a basketball school is tough?
Wow. You Eers have lost it.
Do not misunderestimate Coach Rod. He is a hard-nosed, old school coach and a offensive genius.
Maryland would be a tough place to play if the sport involved eating…Ralph Friedgen is more than Jabba the Hut fat.
Coach Rod’s Strategy/Gameplan:
- Pat White Keeper around end out of the shotgun
- Pat White Option Pitch to Slaton
- Slaton run left
- Slaton run right
- Keep passing to a minimum (because White is a midget who can’t see over the O-Line and because has a weak arm)
- Try like hell to score a lot of points because our defense flat-out sucks and will give up a LOT of points
Yep, that about sums it up.
LL,
You forgot about the reverse and the bubble screen. And the occasional skinny post and/or go route just to keep the defense “honest”…Oh, and 50,000 people is what most other conferences consider “large” stadiums.
Correct you are, Joel!
I love the BigEast. Those guys are so hot.
Funny how the big east teams only play out of conference teams so deep in the gutter there is no way they could lose out of conference!!! they play the sec alright but its the worst team miss. state….maybe they will play Ole Miss next year or better yet take on big 10 power house northwestern!!! give me a break!!! put Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, or Ohio State on your schedule and then come talk to me!!!
pat white and steve slayton for baby dick bitch of the year not heisman!!!!
Will we can all see my know one respects you. Jealous, is the only thing I see…………………Eat your heart out
Sassy
Can you retype that? It doesn’t make any sense. Do you have any pics of your titties?
You guys are crazy to thi k White, and Slaton suck.I mean really…..would you want to play them? not even to mention that dude Devine they got this year, and a 6′8″ wide reciever.give credit where credit is due.and lets not forget the coaches, our SEc wanted the BigEast coaches.time to wake up and smell the coffee folks.Big East is recruiting criminals just like us in the SEC,and have started to make a name
so im pretty sure you guys all got choked up. what do you have to say to a 48-28 victory of oklahoma?
Fuck off #44. We pwn3d you cock suckers
if your talking about pitt beating us, ill agree that you won, you outplayed us. but you didnt own anything. ill give you credit for what you deserve, stop living your life through an upset. which means we were supposed to beat you, you got LUCKY. something you should know from this basketball season against us too. our kicker missed 2fg’s that right there would of beaten you. i wasn’t trying to start anything you homo. all i was trying to do was prove that when we are on, we can’t be beat. At the time oklahoma was according to espn “the best team in the country”, and we “destroyed” them. Im tired of everybody hating on west virginia because we are a good team from a bad conference, and even more so how everybody is always on usc’s nuts. we’ll see next season when we beat auburn, and colorado, and everybody else in our conference, and who ever we play in our bowl game. Sorry, even though you know its coming you cant stop devine or white. Not to mention with our new coaching staff pat white has made remarkable improvements in his “weak arm” which was never weak. he threw bullets at like 80mph, he just wasnt good at a deep ball bc rod didnt beleive in him. that totally ruins your self confidence.
and for real, get off our backs you cant deny that we are a good team.
“ill give you credit for what you deserve, stop living your life through an upset. which means we were supposed to beat you, you got LUCKY.”
Mr. Pot, meet Mr. Kettle. You guys di the same thing when you remind us of how great the Sugar Bowl was…
“At the time oklahoma was according to espn “the best team in the country”, and we “destroyed” them.”
Depending on what day of the week and which “analyst” you asked. USC and LSU were also the “best team in the country”
“Sorry, even though you know its coming you cant stop devine or white.”
Assault Charge + Morgantown cops= Stopping Devine
“he threw bullets at like 80mph, he just wasnt good at a deep ball bc rod didnt beleive in him. that totally ruins your self confidence.”
If White has his confidence ruined by the previous coaching staff than he is a bigger puss than I thought. Most people would try to prove coaches wrong.
“and for real, get off our backs you cant deny that we are a good team”
Good but not great. Great teams win National Championships. Even Pitt won a few back during the disco era…
as for the assault charge, its bogus. i was there in line. The kid started with noel and jockee. the video used for evidence in the upcoming trial will prove that, so he isn’t going to be stopped.
and as for the good team comment, we are the number 15 most winning team in history. so fuck you.
@49 Yeah bragging that your team has the most wins in college football history with no national titles is like saying that you took the cheerleading team out but didn’t fuck a single one.
The Mountaineers will always be content with beating off to the trophies that they covet in other school’s football offices. Just make sure that before you do, you don’t pick up the lighter fluid that you burn the couches with instead of the Vaseline. That might be tragic…
@48 – Devine just pleaded no contest on March 13 and paid his fines in full…
So apparently nobody gave a shit about this “video”…
But I give Devine credit…
He just stood up and took it like a man…
Unlike against USF last season when he got drilled and didn’t look the same the rest of the game…
Apparently it’s pretty easy to stop his ass…
pop him in the mouth one good crisp time and he spends the rest of the day runnin’ east/west…
If he’ll even get on the field…
well if noel was so easy to stop why did florida, miami and almost every team in the nation want him so badly?
and as for the thing about him getting on the field, your fucking retarded, he had to give carries to slaton who at one point was the best running back in college. unfortunately he had a collapse his jr year but he still was good, i mean he had over 1000 yards. either way, you cant just let a true freshman get carries over a once great junior.
Just watch him next season, and im positive you will choke from eating the mouthful of a statement you just said, because a lot of ‘eers fans will be spoonfeeding the hatred comments back in your faggot mouth.
EERMAN, 13-9. pwn3d.
Country Roads are closed in Pitt.
Arm Pitt, your the exactly thing thing that makes people hate other schools, there is no such thing as owning someone when you win by 4 points. you won the game, i get it. but you still sucked for the season, and it wasn’t an ownage.
grow up, and learn to give respect where it should be given.
if anything you should be with me in this argument about the BE. its the same thing as them bashing mccoy.
You stupid douche…
In the end, the only places that wanted Devine were Bama and WVU due to his shitty ass grades…
Everybody else backed off of him almost a year in advance…
Slaton had a great year?
Except when he took a dump against USF and Pitt…
Where the fuck was he in the games you needed him…
Apparently you didn’t watch the USF game, Eeerman…
Halfway through the first quarter, Devine came around the end and was subsequently grappled by USF LB Ben Moffit, held up and them earholed by the USF Safety as he was getting smacked in the mouth by the corner…
As he got up his eyes were wide as saucers and he looked timid on every carry after that (a whopping total of 4)…
Devine won’t be able to carry the load and White gets hurt everytime the game is in question or he takes a solid hit…
Oh and one last thing…
You might not have known this, but…
Chris Rainey is faster than Noel Devine…
It’s a proven fact…
And I’m just curious…
With TWO babies back in Ft. Myers…
How does an underaged unemployed college athlete have money to go to the bar and why is he even at the bar?
Maybe he should be saving some of that booster money to take care of his kids…
@55 If he is spending his booster money on booze instead of sending money home to his kids, that just cements his intelligence level.
Maybe he needs the liquor to help him sleep. After all, the nightmares of the USF Bulls blowing him up can get to him. Same thing happened to White after he left with a vulva contusion…
EERMAN,
The Big East was down this year. We should have all seen it coming after KY beat Louisville. Rutgers didn’t do shit compared to what it was hyped up to be, and USF had a good run but sucked it up when they lost to Dixon-less Oregon. With the exception of WVU (pwn3d), the BE had a down year so don’t expect me to be on your side on this shit.
And let’s be honest… you couldn’t even run the table in our down-conference and when you had a chance to show that our conference was more than Thursday Night football you couldn’t close the deal against a Dave Wannstedt coached team.
Don’t forget that Auburn took our DC so they will probably pwn your ass. You will be lucky to only lose by 4 against Auburn.
@54
i was referring to slaton in his freshman/sophmore years you retard, go back and read it.
and even if rainey is faster, hes no where near as agile. straight line speed isn’t as important as your lateral speed and acceleration. Not to mention noel has an amazing field of view and elusiveness.
oh and your actually wrong. there is no proven anything. go check out the scouting reports, rainey runs a 4.37, noel runs a 4.35. plus noel is 20lbs heavier then him, and he has size issues? rainey is tinier then him.
what no comment guys?
@59 Dude, there are a hell of a lot of things more important in life than Mountaineer football…
BTW, how can I buy one of those MBA’s that you guys sell??? Do I need to work for Mylan and be one of the Gov.’s kids???

i never said it was the most important thing. there are way more important things then everybody’s team. i just hate how you guys dont respect us as a program. i understand that our conference is weak as a whole, but we are way better then we get credit for.
@63 Win National Championships and don’t choke to a Dave Wannstedt coached team and you will get the respect that you crave…
Beating an Oklahoma team that lost the year before to Boise St. and beating an overrated Georgia team doesn’t give you anymore respect than the Louisiana-Monroe Fighting Nutria beating Alabama…
The one thing that you and ULM have in common is that neither school has won it all. If your team is as good as you claim, you should run the table through that pathetic comference…

EERMAN,
You are a fucking embarrassment. Please go choke against the shittiest Pitt team in 20 years again.
GO PANTHERS!
I hate to admit it but I think there is a big chance that we lose to Auburn in both 08 and 09. I have a bad feeling about their new coordinators and I think their new offense will be very effective. Also, I think they have one of the few defenses in the country that is fast enough to contain White. Other than Auburn I don’t see any other team that we have a big chance of losing to.
