The Big East fans (largely WVU) have convinced themselves that they are the best. And they have to. This is the last year of Slaton and White. They really have no hope of doing anything on a national level without them. This need to accomplish something, besides edging 1 SEC team in a BCS bowl game, has obsessed them. They are dillusional enough in this need that they are able to convince themselves that Rutgers, Loserville, and themselves can play with anyone in the country.

While I think they can competitively play top caliber teams one time, I can’t imagine a scenario where when playing LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee in one season with them coming out with anything more than 1 win. Especially after Steve Slaton is playing in the NFL, and Pat White is trying to make the cut in the CFL.

His ego demands it. He’s already on everyone’s list of football geniuses (and I know he is, because I saw what he did with underweight, undertalented, but smart and motivated kids at Tulane), and has put together some nice seasons at WVU, but until West Virginia can upgrade its schedule (and the Big East can upgrade, period), the Mountaineers will be a nice yearly side note. He wants to go somewhere to win a national title, and for that you need a conference with more….legitimacy. A two loss SEC/ Big Ten team will play in BCS bowl, while a two loss Big East team that doesn’t win the conference is lucky to play on New Years’ Day. Blame the media or the SEC homers or whomever you like, but that’s just the facts.
I hope for your sake that you’ve got a Beamer on your hands, but I think you have a Meyer…and he’s just waiting for the next big chance to come along to take a step up. He just happened to be sane enough to realize he couldn’t handle the Alabama boosters after dealing with people who are happy as long as they play on New Years Day.
