Lou’s Locks

The Locks had another .500 week last week as the Auburn horse lost its legs and the UAB fade failed to cover. The yearly total is now 21-17-3, and we need a strong finish to get that number near 60%. Can this college football season get any crazier? Oregon goes down last night to make 5 #2 teams to lose this season. I believe that this year just makes the case stronger for a playoff of some kind. No two teams this year can lay claim that they absolutely deserve to be in the BCS title game. Legitimately, there are 6-8 teams that would have a shot in a playoff scenario. We all know that a playoff is about as likely as Mark Mangino (HC of Kansas) winning a swimsuit contest, but there should be a strong push for at least a plus one playoff. The current BCS format leaves too much control in the hands of the voters and everything becomes a popularity contest. Can you imagine how popular an 8 team CFB playoff would be? It just makes too much sense on a number of fronts, but alas it is a mere dream at this point.

A pretty sparse board to choose from this week, but here are a few games that I like that did not make the cut. CINCY +6.5, T TECH +8.5, CLEM. -8, S. FLA -8 and WASH. ST. -2. If you noticed the “bye week” theory held strong as both Miss St. and Ky. covered. That makes this theory an incredible 9-0 ATS in the SEC (watch for it next week as Aub. comes off a bye). Now for this week’s Locks:

1. UGA -7.5 V. KY. Is there a team in the SEC playing better than Georgia right now? Everything seemed to turn when HC Saint Richt called for a team celebration in the UF game. Next, the “righteous one” called for a “black out” last week against Auburn. What is in store for this week? I have an idea …… how about jockstraps, bow ties and dog bones? If that won’t get you fired up, nothing will. Seriously, no need for motivation this week as Georgia is in revenge mode from last year’s loss to Ky. This game presents a big mismatch as Ky’s run D has given up over 200 yds. rushing in each game in the month of Nov. and ranks #98 against the run in the nation. Of course, UGA can run the ball with RB K. Moreno and a now healthy T. Brown. Going unnoticed in this recent Bulldog re-emergence is the pass defense which now ranks #28 in the nation. Kentucky relies on the pass with QB A. Woodson. With banged up RBs T. Dixon and R. Little, this is not a good match-up for the Cats. UGA 40 KY 24

2. MICH ST +3 V. PENN ST The Spartans come into this game after their best day on offense last week in the win against Purdue. Penn St comes into this game on the heels of 2 suspensions this week in an on-campus brawl and plenty of distractions. The key in this game is the Spartan pass rush. When MSU has 3 or more sacks in a game they are 6-0. While Penn St’s OL is good at run blocking, they are very suspect in protecting QB A. Morelli, who, by the way, is horrendous on the road as a starting QB. Penn St is probably the better team, but a home dog in a conference game is a good bet. Plus, this is senior day for the Spartans, and I expect them to be fired up. MSU is 4-1 ATS against teams with a winning record and play great in their last game of the year (17-3 ATS). Spartans pull the upset in East Lansing.  MICH ST 27 PENN ST 23

3. MIZZOU -7 @ K STATE Kansas St. is in free fall mode after having lost to Iowa St. and Nebraska the past 2 weeks by a combined score of 104-51. On the other hand, Missouri is playing great and has a shot at playing the BCS title game. Tiger QB C. Daniel is on fire  throwing for 781 yds and 8 TDs in the past 2 games (Mizzou pass O = #5 in nation) while the Wildcat pass D (ranked #98 in the nation) has given up 17 TD passes in the past 6 games (Nebraska threw for 519 yds last week). K State also has 2 DL and a Db who are questionable for the game. You just wonder whether they have anything left in the tank. Most experts are thinking Mizzou could be in a “look ahead” situation with the upcoming Kansas showdown next week and that is why the line has dropped from 10 to 7, but Mizzou got a little scare from A&M last week which should have them focused. Also, the Oregon loss opens the door for them to get into the BCS title game. MIZZOU 47 K STATE 34

BONUS GAME: TULSA – 15.5 @ ARMY Tulsa is piling up the points and seems to have hit their stride in bombing Houston last week. Army is just not very good this year, and is a beat up team after having played a very difficult schedule lately. Tulsa will name the score in this one.  TULSA 56 ARMY 24

GOOD LUCK
