Maybe, just maybe…

Maybe Pete Boone knows what the hell he is doing.  While I hate the fact that the press conference to announce Ed Orgeron’s firing cut into my tailgating time on Saturday, but it was still a hell of a press conference to watch.  Those of you who missed it, can find it here

Boone kept on bringing up the basketball search when he found a diamond in the rough with Andy Kennedy almost as to say, ”hey, I know I fucked up the last football HC hiring, but I did good with basketball.  Look!!!”   The Build a Vaught program begins in Oxford.

We all should have known something was up when that vote of confidence came last month.

Erik at deepsouthsoutsports.net (he has a good list of potential replacements, BTW) and I have sparred over this for a while.  I didn’t agree with the firing of Coach David Cutcliffe, after only one losing season, but now the hiring of the 0 makes sense.  I have long said Ole Miss got shit backwards when they brought in a good coach (Cutcliffe) and then replaced him with a good recruiter (Orgeron).  Florida did just the opposite (good recruiter in Zook followed by a successful coach in Herban) and it yielded good results.

Now Ole Miss has a chance to hire a good head coach who will actually have an opportunity to coach some talent in Oxford, but who knows how many of the players who have given verbals to The 0 will now de-commit?  Also, how will this affect the next great savior of Ole Miss football, Jevan Snead.  He already red-shirted a year after transferring from Texass to play for The 0.  If he decided to transfer again, would the NCAA allow him to play right away at another school?  I know he is getting some high quality SEC poon thrown in his face in Oxford, but is that enough to keep him if there is a coach hired that doesn’t feel the wildboyz, tittie-twisting, porto-crapper tipping coaching style that was an appeal to him when he transferred?

The talent is in Oxford (now not just the talented trim), but is there a coach out there who can coach and is willing to coach in Oxford over the forecasted 3 dozen schools that will fire/force resignations/be looking ’cause their guy went somewhere sexier?  Ole Miss still has that certain image problem outside of Mississippi you know…

Coach 0 leaves us for the last time…

  1. I don’t want to look like I’m campaigning for a certain hire, but I would go with Gary Patterson of TCU if I were Ole Miss. Yeah, they went 7-5 this season, but the guy has had some big time success out there.

  2. For 4.1 million a year Saban will be in Oxford tonight holding hands with the mascot formerly known as COL Reb.

  3. who is weeping

  4. Now Ole Miss has a chance to hire a good head coach who will actually have an opportunity to coach some talent in Oxford….

He sure screwed the pooch on that one.

  5. I can’t believe they hired Houston… I would think he woulda tried to jump out of the SEC… if he thinks Arkansas fans are crazy, he will be floored by what he finds in Oxford.

  6. Kind of makes you wonder how much of a spiteful streak he has in him.

  7. I wish rick neuheisel would have been hired in Oxford. The comedy wouldn’t have stopped from Oxford, but the Nutt hire will provide plenty of comedy too

  8. Text message from one of my friends regarding the Nutt hire (text messaging and Nutt, haha):

You ready for the “wild rebel” formation? Tig Barksdale is the future D-Mac, but for now its probably Cordera Eason, maybe even Ken Davis. Jevan Sneed is our Matt Jones!
