The Disingenuous Drifter Bowl: Alabama versus Arkansas

Anyone notice that Petrino referred to Frank Broyles as “Coach Broyle” without the ’s’? Way to notice that tradition Bobby…nice

In the coming days and weeks, the disingenuous drifter will say what Arkansas fans want to hear.

He’ll look at them with blank shark eyes and tell them, in a monotone voice, how excited he is to be the coach of the Razorbacks. [ESPN, Pat Forde]

What’s really gonna suck is not only how bad the Hogs will be next season after McFadden, Jones, Hillis and Monk all go pro, but also trying to avoid killing all the no-nothing pundits with a flame-thrower because they will all say “Look how good we had it with Nutt” when the team goes 5-7 in 2008.

Good luck to all the Arkansas fans who want a coach that will stay loyal and stick with the program, because you don’t have one yet. Just remember two things:

1. Petrino signs a 10 year contract extension with U of L and claims that he is “home” and is “dedicated to the program.” Three months later he’s gone to the Falcons

2. Petrino has a talk with Arthur Blank on Monday about his desire to come back to Atlanta and coach another season. Thirty-six hours later he goes to the Razorbacks.

Honestly, who is a bigger piece of shit on Tommy Tubberville’s Under Armour shoe?  Petrino or Saban?

I know that Saban blatantly lied and said that he wasn’t going anywhere, but Petrino just totally bailed in his team during the season. At least Saban was with Miami for 2 years and finished out last year before taking off and leaving the organization in a complete fucking mess.

Petrino met up with Barn officials in the infamous clandestine meeting for Wingnut’s job a couple of years ago.

Contracts obviously mean nothing. As was pointed out on Mike and Mike yesterday, Petrino has signed twenty years worth of contracts in the past 18 months [podcast].

There’s a real loyal guy!! He signs a 10 year contract with Louisville in July 2006. Then bails on them and signs a 5 year “deal” with the Falcons just last January. Now he signs for 5 years with Arkansas yesterday.

In keeping with the dog theme here, Petrino is that crazy barking dog in your neighborhood that is constantly chasing cars,  but in Petrino’s case, the cars are new coaching jobs

Well, if Petrino is that crazy dog barking in my neighborhood, looks like Michael Vick really killed him in Atlanta.
    Oops.
    My bad.

@4, Bammers prefer the phrase “disciple of the Bear”

“Petrino could qualify for an extra $ 200, 000 a year, for example, if Arkansas football players score 990 on the NCAA’s Academic Performance Rate (APR ) and if the team’s graduation success rate is 75 percent or better.”

I have to say this is my favorite part of what I have read about his contract. That’s more money than if he wins the SEC Championship and appears in the BCS Championship.

I noticed the “Broyle” thing, too, but I immediately thought, “Hmm, all this time I thought it was Broyles, but I must be wrong because there is no way this guy would screw that up in his introduction. Just…no…way.”

So, does everything that happened with Petrino show that all the fuss over Saban “lying” to the media last year was BS? I mean, hate Saban all you want for other things, but it was total BS the way he was vilified for lying about the Bama job during the season.
While you may not like Saban for other reasons, this shows that you shouldn’t bring “well, he lied to Miami” as a reason to hate him. Saban denied the rumors b/c he was still trying to win and finish out the season b/c he owed it to his players. At least he didn’t quit until after the season was over with, which actually hurt him in going to his new job (imagine if Saban could have started recruiting at this time last year instead of 3 weeks before NSD). And he told,Hizinga (I know I spelled it wrong, don’t feel like looking it up) he would stay if asked.
That’s what pisses me off the most about the media – they want it both ways. If a coach isn’t going to pan out in the NFL and wants out, he’s screwed, but if the owner wants to fire him, by all means, go for it.
Think about that. Not every coach is going to make it in the NFL and some realize it before others. If a coach realizes that his heart is not in the game, what is worse for the players and the team – to resign so that the team can possibly hire someone whose heart is in it, or to stick it out and get paid? The media has made it impossible to transition back without criticism b/c you can’t stay with your team until the end of the season and then make a decision (which is the right thing to do) or quit mid-season (which really is a bitch thing to do and shouldn’t be done).

@8 i usually agree with 95%with you. not this time. huge diff between the NFL and College.

I would not want my kid playing ball for a proven liar. Kids don’t need to be thinking that people like Saban are OK, but they need to know that they are out there in this world, waiting in the shadows, to steal their lunch money.

Not what kids need to be learning

I love the irony in the comment about Petrino and Saban being under Tubberville’s shoe. Are we talking about the same Tommy Tubberville who said “The only way I’m leaving Oxford is in a pine box,” and then bolted to coach the Poultry Science majors immediately after pledging his loyalty to Ole Miss? Tubs also did not have the common decency to properly tell his players good-bye, as a man would have done. So, if we’re going to lump Saban and Petrino together as “liars,” don’t forget to throw Tubs in the mix, as well. Roll Toddy.

Comparing Tubbs to Saban and Petrino is just dumb. Only a mildly retarded bammer could possibly connect those dots with a straight face.
You guys aent even creative in your spin techniques any more. Now, your just flat out pointing at others and crying.

    # 9 -

Why is Saban a proven liar? Did you not read my post? Saban did lie, yes, but he was forced into it and decided to lie for the better of the team he coached. How is that the same thing?

That logic makes me think that you would have preferred one of two things for Saban to do:
1 – Quit like Petrino instead of lie to the media when hounded.
2 – Say that he’s looking at another job and then go back and try to coach his team.

How is that better for the players and organization than what Saban did? So, technically, Saban is a liar, so he is a proven liar that you wouldn’t want your kid playing for, even though the lie was used for the better of the players and organization that he was committed to? In addition, the lie was only to Saban’s detriment. He did not gain anything from it and has been slammed in the media b/c of it.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want my kid to play for a coach who would put my kid’s needs in front of the coach’s own.

Thank God the parents of about 30 of the best high school seniors in the country don’t think that way.

  13. 2007 December 13

that is a pathetic response sad state. I agree with the ears whitworth. 30 sets of those parents must be idiots.it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

  14. 2007 December 13

    13 –

Explain why it is pathetic. Also explain why Saban and Petrino should be lumped together. No Saban Sucks!/Is a Liar!, etc. baseless attacks. Give me an objective argument.

  15. 2007 December 13

which is worse? Being a liar or just quitting?

    Hey #11,
Are you serious? “MIldly retarded Bammer”? I do not know where to begin. First off, how about you not sling around the word “retarded” in such a manner. Down’s Syndrome is not something that should be used as a means to demean someone else. It’s classless, revolting, and pathetic. People who are afflicted with Down’s Syndrome are some of the most sincere and genuine people on this planet, and they should not be relegated to serve as the butts of your jokes or put-downs. Second, explain how the statement “The only way I’m leaving Oxford is in a pine box” is somehow better than “You’ve got a head coach” (Petrino), or “I will not be the head coach at Alabama” (Saban). Explain, and by that, I don’t mean by supporting your arguments with witty comments about how “Bammers” are “fags,” “retards,” or some other well-crafted jab. I mean use logic and rational thinking, because I am ever so anxious to see how my post led you to call me a “mildly retarded Bammer.”

The difference is that Saban, like practically all coaches who have ever changed jobs, told a lie to the media (Tubs did it, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not. Fran did it. Nutt did it. Rich Rodriquez did it. It happens everywhere). Keep in mind, he didn’t lie to his players or to his employers, just the media (which means us, too, of course). And it was just that one. Don’t give me that nonsense about how his reason for it doesn’t matter and that parents should protect their children from his influence. Unless of course you never told your child there was a Santa Claus. But in your mind, that’s a justifiable lie, right? The bottom line here is that the world wants to hate Nick Saban for feeding into what the rest of college football feels is Crimson Delusion. We were supposed to be idiotic for thinking he would coach the Tide, remember? So rather than eat that crow, the rest of college football would rather say he’s a bad man, and then everyone outside the Tide Nation got what basically amounts to chocolate-covered orgasm–they could hate the man who led the program they hate. Sad State’s response is dead on. What’s pathetic is that people are hanging on to something so stupid a year later.

Relax, Tom. They can’t provide a salient argument because the point of this isn’t to moralize about what an upstanding coach looks like, it’s to demonize Nick Saban for coaching at Alabama. It’s pretty easy to dismiss anyone who uses the expression “Bammer” because it’s a meaningless knock that’s intended to be hurtful but doesn’t have any basis in anything negative.

I understand what you mean tidefanintn, but I was set-off by that idiot’s usage of “retarded.” If you’re going to make fun of someone, calling them a “retard” is not the way to do it. People with Down’s Syndrome cannot help the fact that they have it, and his post bothered me mainly because of that sole reason.

  20. 2007 December 13

Wow, I thought that Angry Eer actually asked a good question, of which would be considered worse, lying or quitting?

    Hard to say

And anyone who says Saban didn’t lie is fucked up

Which time? When he left Miami, or Baton Rouge?

Still, I’m OK with it in either case, it’s just a career move.
