Eer Head Coach Candidates

2007 December 19
by AngryEer

A couple of days ago College Football Live announced that the top four candidates for the premier coaching position in America are:

  • Terry Bowden
  • Doc Holiday
  • Bud Foster
  • Rick Trickett

I am hearing that this is a done deal.  Doc is coming home!!!! High 5!!! Suck it Gators.

Doc Holliday is my favorite.  Doc brings the spread, amazing recruiting ability (and probably some UF recruits).  Plus I hope that we rape Florida’s recruits so I can watch the Gates weep.

I just read article that says Florida’s Doc Holliday is a safeties coach which means he could handle both sides of the ball,  and that Urban Meyer says he’s one of the top candidates for the job.  Plus he was with the Mountaineers for 20 years. and played there.

PARKERSBURG — John ‘Doc’ Holliday, who was an assistant football coach at West Virginia University from 1979 to 1999, has emerged as WVU’s leading candidate to succeed Rich Rodriguez as the head coach of the Mountaineers, The Parkersburg News and Sentinel has learned.

Holliday, 50, is poised to become WVU’s coach with an announcement to come as early as today, sources close to the situation said Tuesday.

Holliday was one of several candidates interviewed for the position which Rodriguez vacated on Sunday to become the head football coach at the University of Michigan. Others who met with WVU athletics director Ed Pastilong and other school officials included former Auburn head coach Terry Bowden, Florida State offensive line coach Rick Trickett and Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster.

Like Rodriguez, Holliday is a former Mountaineer football player.

He won three letters —in 1976, 1977 and 1978 —when he played linebacker under coach Frank Cignetti.

Immediately after ending his playing career at WVU, Holliday, a former state champion wrestler at Hurricane High School, joined the Mountaineer football staff as a graduate assistant coach, a position he held until 1981 when he became a part-time coach. In 1983, he became the wide receivers coach for WVU, a position he manned until taking over the linebackers in 1990. After three years as the linebackers coach, Holliday returned to his former position as the receivers coach, which he maintained until his departure following the 1999 season. In 1995, head coach Don Nehlen promoted Holliday to assistant head coach.

It was at West Virginia that Holliday earned his reputation as a standout recruiter as it was his job to mine the talent-rich state of Florida for the Mountaineers. One of Holliday’s prize recruits was linebacker Steve Grant.

After spending 21 seasons at West Virginia – one under Cignetti and 20 under Nehlen –Holliday in 2000 accepted the position as associate head coach and wide receivers coach at North Carolina State, where he remained until becoming the associate head coach, safeties coach and recruiting coordinator under Urban Meyer at the University of Florida in 2005.

In 1975, Holliday was crowned the 170-pound state wrestling champion. Immediately following his pin in the title match, a photographer snapped perhaps the most famous wrestling picture in state history as Holliday is shown celebrating his win while his crest-fallen opponent lies flat on the mat.

and his name is Doc Holliday… which is really REALLY cool!

“Plus I hope that we rape Florida’s recruits”

In typical West Virginia “Deliverance” fashion.

“I just read article that says Florida’s Doc Holliday is a safeties coach which means he could handle both sides of the ball, and that Urban Meyer says he’s one of the top candidates for the job.”

You are clueless when you come to college football, ‘Eer. You didn’t realize he’s a Safeties Coach? He coached at WVU for 20 some-odd years and you don’t know this? And he’s from West Virginia yet you know so little about him until today?

I thought you were “married to ‘Eer football”?

Doc’s done a great job for us and I wish him the best. It was only a matter of time before he got a head coaching gig somewhere.

“Loseer” didn’t tell you that Doc has hired Wyatt Earp as his offensive coordinator. Doc can be assured that any recruit he gets from the state of Florida will be someone that “Urbie” does not want.

Eer Football is my bride….you are correct

  7. 2007 December 19

Really, ‘Eer? Than how did you not know all about Doc Holliday until today? Because you’re an uneducated idiot when it comes to college football.

Eeyore I hope you never begin taking medication for your bipolar disorder. You may be the greatest fan in CFB history. That you document your breakdowns for our entertainment is laudable.

What happened to supporting the Open Letter to Rich Rodriguez and the notion that stealing recruits was wrong? Either way this isnt the 80’s or 90’s. No big name recruit wants to freeze their balls off in Morgantown, drinking ’shine and looking at beat ass girls.

Holiday is probably the best guy to pick up the pieces though. He is a big reason for Florida’s success.

    Brian

I am the greatest fan in CFB history.

Watch as my Eers steal a coach and recruits from the Godless Fucking Gators

    Happy Holidays

Doc Holliday does not look like a very good hire. Has never been a HC or even a coordinator. This smells like Orgeron…

@13 The postgame press conferences would be a riot. No one would be able to understand a thing the coach or players say.

  17. 2007 December 19

Jerrell Powe would be an awesome nose tackle in that vaunted 3-3-5

  18. 2007 December 19

    CGB:
Good point. And conveniently, ‘Eer avoids responding to your post about his hypocrisy.

  19. 2007 December 19

@15 TOSU is going to spank that Coon Ass

The sad thing is you are condoning the continuance of inbreeding within the WVU football program with the endorsement of Holliday ala Bama and Michigan just as they breaking from the mold…

The Sombrero of Thorns has indeed become the hat of choice in WV…

Pretty quick considering it hasn’t even been a week since the Mexican left you crying in the snow…

However the larger indicator of the lack of football intelligence within the confines of the Mountaineer campus is the fact that Holliday is being considered while your administration has totally missed the actual best and most qualified candidate on the UF staff for a HFC position in Charlie Strong…

    ass jackers…

Why do you keep calling us all SEC homophobes? There must be a lot of gays in WVU. I knew about Steve “Dildo” Slaton and Patsy “I Dislocated My Vagina” White, but i didn’t realize you there were so many more.

LOL!!!! Dislocated my vagina!!! CLASSIC!!!! UF will always attract the top notch athlete, and coach. WVU on the other hand, is taking kids that for whatever reason had to settle on WVU. Even your 3 saviors, White, Slaton, & Devine had other schools ahead of you before settling! Please keep the laughs coming!! Next thing you’ll be telling me is that Jerry West is coming back to coach the basketball team and Major Harris is coming back to coach QB’s.

Santa, If i have done at least just one thing right this year…

Please send Terry Bowden to WVU with Jeff in tow…

I will happily accept coal for the next ten years if you will only grant me this one sweet little Christmas wish…

    Ok…

Well, maybe this and a large breasted blonde…

  40. 2007 December 20

When you really think about it. Terry Bowden is the perfect fit for WVU. Case in point:

    - He’s a WVU grad.

    - He already knows the words to “Country Roads”.

    - He recently said that it would be his “dream job”.

    - He’s real short so he suffers from “Little Man’s Syndrome”. So he has the personality to lead WVU since they always will be the “little guy” unable to hang with the “Big Boys”.

    - He’s a quitter. This falls in line perfectly with ‘Eer football on how they simply “quit” against Pitt with a trip to the BCS title game on the line.

A match made in heaven! Oh Dear Lord! Country Roads! Hi-Fives all around!

  41. 2007 December 20

Some thoughts on the matter at hand. Doc certainly has that mountain look in his eye although as a former player it maybe he just took some pretty hard licks. Or maybe it is just like the movie, poor soul he is just too high strung!

But anyway if you are happy with local boy coming home then I am happy for you.

The panic button has already been pushed in Tallahassee and a herculean effort is underway to keep the entire recruiting class from bolting to West, Virginia.

Duck and cover at the sound of falling rocks!
