I loved VanGorder at UGA for his double thumbs up, psycho eyes, and his uncanny resemblance to Jim Hacksaw Duggan after a big defensive play. All he needed was an American flag and a 2x4 when he patrolled the sidelines.

BVG defenses were good when he was at UGA. He had David Pollack, Sean Jones, Thomas Davis, Odell Thurman, Greg Blue, Boss Bailey, Tim Jennings, Demario Minter, Jonathan Sullivan, Robert Geathers, Bruce Thorton, Quentin Moses, and Charles Johnson to name a few.

His successor at UGA, Willie Martinez, had been all over with BVG in the 1990's (Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, and Central Florida). I believe Martinez was the DC at Central Florida while BVG was the linebackers coach there. Richt brought BVG and Martinez to UGA with him back in 2001. I say all of that because it shows that Martinez and BVG coach the same defense. An occasional blitz and pressure must come from the front 4. That was real easy for BVG's strategy in 2002, 2003, and 2004 with guys like Pollack, Sullivan, Geathers, and Moses, but that kind of defense will not work without freaks on the line.

UGA struggled last year with lack of a freakish front 4 and struggled early this year for the same reasons with that strategy. Martinez changed up the scheme this season, but it was too late after losses to SCar and the UT beat down. I don't see UGA playing a bend-don't-break defense next year with the lack of D-line pass rushers we have returning and the speed we'll have at linebacker. BVG will try to force his strategy and fail.

BVG will not have the talent or talent depth at SCar to maintain a great defense and will move to another job after 2 average years at SCar. If SCar can't win an SEC title very soon, SOS won't be around long. BVG's stay will be even shorter.

Some SCar fans think that BVG will be able to bring an ability to recruit the state of Georgia. He was never the "get'em signed" guy at UGA. Not a good people person and that's what you expect from a defensive coordinator, I guess. Add to the fact that he caused more damage in South Georgia than Sherman did to Atlanta with his brief head coaching stop at Georgia Southern. He did away with several traditions at GSU like the triple-option, winning, and making the playoffs. Folks in South Georgia really don't like BVG, especially high school coaches that ever had to deal with him. So, SCar fans, BVG will not bring in-roads to recruiting Georgia. Spurrier will have better luck than BVG.

Once again, the SCar preseason national championship hype has begun. I think this is the 8th season in a row that the gamecocks have won the preseason MNC as voted by the fans of SCar.
