Lou’s Picks Part Dos December 31, 2007

Happy New Year to all. The bowl season has gone much like the regular season with some wacky games. 3-2 so far with my bowl picks as Cincy got “back door” covered and BYU’s coaches went to sleep at the end of the first half. Oh well, 60% so far ain’t too bad. Let’s see if we can improve on that with these next selections.

1. S FLA -6.5 v. ORE
The Ducks come into this game 0-6 ATS to end the season. After QB D. Dixon went down, Oregon has not been close to the same team. The Ducks also have been banged up Once ranked #1, Oregon is now relegated to the Sun Bowl, and probably could care less about being there. The Bulls on the other hand love the opportunity to knock off a big name opponent from one of the power conferences. S. Fla. has seen the spread and done a great job of defending it when it stopped P. White/S. Slaton and W. Va. earlier this year. Oregon’s D has trouble with the run so QB M. Grothe and the trio of RBs should have their way. S FLA 34 ORE 17

2. FRESNO/GT UNDER 55
I was leaning toward taking Fresno and the points but the more I looked at this game, the more I liked the under. GT’s D is very salty and only allows just over 100 yds rushing and about 19 points per game. The Jacket O on the other hand is pretty anemic outside of RB T. Choice. It is going to be a high of 30 degrees in Boise with some wind, so I doubt you will see much airing it out. Jacket DC J. Tenuta has taken over for Chan Gailey as HC so there is some distraction there as well. Fresno HC P. Hill looks like the guy on cable who builds the chopper, and is as much of a hard ass. He suspended 8 players on the eve of the game for missing curfew. Doubt GT cares about heading to Boise for the New year so I see uninspired play and not much scoring. GT 24 FRESNO 19

3. AUB +2.5 v CLEM
SEC underdogs are money in bowls (see Miss St.), IMO. I am a bit concerned about what the offense will look like with new OC T. Franklin now on the Plains (had 10 practices to install it). But, when you are #101 in total offense can it get any worse? Both teams have very stout Ds, as Auburn ranks #7 in total D, #7 against the pass, #26 against the run and #5 in scoring. Clemson ranks #8 in total D, #15 (run), #20 (pass) and #10 (scoring), but will be without 2 starting LBs who were 2 of the top 5 tacklers on the team. Clemson is very balanced on O averaging more than 200 yds rushing and receiving led by the one-two punch of RBs J. Davis and CJ Spiller. Some have said the Clemson will look like UGA did against Auburn, but I harken back to the last game where Clemson had to come back to beat So Car on a last second FG. SEC is much better than ACC.
AUB 21 CLEM 17 (BUY THE HALF POINT TO MAKE IT AUB +3)

4. FLA -10 v MICH
I wanted so much to take Michigan in this game it was not even funny. I considered the Heisman jinx, Lloyd Carr’s last game at Michigan as the head man, and the Wolverine’s finally getting healthy at key positions. But when I viewed this objectively, and put aside my total disdain for the Mighty Gaytors, it was not even close. Michigan has trouble defending the spread option …… UF runs this offense to perfection. All of Michigan’s coaching staff will be somewhere else next year …… is there a focus issue for them? Herban Oscar Meyer loves to run the score up and is great in bowl games. Tim Teabag is part android, so the Heisman jinx will have no effect on him. Florida will be playing at home ….. there will be plenty of jorts, wife-beater t-shirts, mullets and pencil-thin moustaches in the crowd to make the Gaits feel right at home. I think Michigan will put up some points, but will not be able to keep up with UF’s speed. QB C. Henne is also good for at least one crucial TO. Florida in a romp. FLA 45 MICH 24

5. OKLA -7.5 v. WVA
I liked the Sooners even before the coaching debacle, but now love it even more. The Mountaineers do not have a head coach and some assistants and are playing arguably the best team in the nation. Okla. is loaded on both sides of the ball with superior athletes and is on a roll after dismantling Mizzou in Big 12 championship game. W. Va lost to Pitt and blew its chances at playing for the NC. I doubt they even care at this point now that their coach has bailed on them. Pat White and Steve Slaton are talking about the NFL. Plus, I do not see WVa stopping the Sooner offense. I have heard many say that Okla does not play well in bowls (e.g. last year against Boise), but I think they will have a chip on their shoulder form that game and want to make a point. WVa also ended the year with a rash of injuries. This is just not a good spot for WVa and they run into a buzz saw named Okla. OKLA 41 WVA 20 (BUY THE HALF POINT TO BE SAFE).

OTHER GAMES THAT DID NOT MAKE THE CUT: OK ST -4.5, WISC/TN UNDER 59, MIZZOU -3.5, ILL +13.5, VA TECH -3, RUTGERS
10.
GOOD LUCK!

Taco Bell Soft Chop Blocks?

8. Sad State of Affairs - December 31, 2007

Nevermind. It was not aproved by the coaching staff, as Tubs cleared it up with reporters at halftime. According to him, there is a statement in the playbook warning against a chop block, but unfortunately, it was on one of the few unillustrated pages in the book.

The Irons Brothers, upon hearing of the announcement, said, “We totally understand.”

I’m working on a link as we speak.

Go polish that Weedeater Bowl trophy.

So UAT beat Colorado who beat Oklahoma who made it to a BCS game, is this national championship #13 for Bama?
