Calipari fearfully sharts himself thinking about Tennessee

Oh the good times with this classy coach. Memphis deserves him.

Has anyone seen this quote from Calipari about the upcoming game against Tennessee?

Come on, we’re not even in the same league and they don’t want us in the SEC and they want the city of Memphis to die. –Memphis coach John Calipari joked to the Associated Press, trying to underplay the highly anticipated matchup against No. 7 Tennessee on Feb. 23

A couple of things. Pearl owns Calipari. Oh yes, Pearl has basically pitched a tent and is living inside of Calipari’s head. My beloved Vols don’t play Tiger High for two more weeks and Calipari is already talking about it? Obviously Tennessee’s got him thinking an awful lot about the Vols. You got to love insecurity. Lets you know you are doing something right. A few years ago Calipari wouldn’t have thought twice about Tennessee.

A couple of weeks ago, Calipari, shared some interesting thoughts about UT and the SEC.  Calipari told Seattle Times columnist Bud Withers that the Vols can’t win a head-to-head recruiting battle with the Tigers in Memphis:

“Tennessee will try to come here and recruit some, but the kids we want here, we’re going to get.” Very few of Calipari’s players are from Memphis or from Tennessee for that matter….in fact there are only 3 players from Tennesseee on his entire team and none of them are starters

This year, the top player in Memphis, Elliot Williams, chose Duke over either school. Leslie McDonald, the 2009 top target, has Memphis and UT on his short list, along with several other high-profile programs.

Then Calipari also said the Vols, “foul, like on every possession.”

Underscoring his lack of enthusiasm for UT’s Feb. 23 visit to the FedEx Forum, Calipari had this to say about SEC teams:

“If they want to play us, they should put us in the league. … But they don’t want you in the league. They just want to use you.”

He allowed that UT this year is “the most talented team to come into our building” in his eight years at Memphis. Keep in mind that they would not have “their building” if it were not for the NBA’s Grizzlies. The point of hilarity is that he, the Don of Memphis basketball mafiosi, also is o’fer in recruiting Memphis lately, especially as it pertains to the Pearl era.

  1. Bruce Pearl would be wise not to let Calpari’s sly rhetoric lull him to sleep. That bullshit has to be taken with a grain of salt. The pussy factor is out when Tennessee goes over there on Saturday week. Unless Memphis brings their UTEP game, the Vols are going to have to play out of their minds to beat that bunch, even though Memphis has played only five or six teams so far. Recruiting in Memphis gets you a load of second raters compared to those NBA pros Calipari has recruited from all over. He uses the excuse of Tennessee having an edge in Memphis so he can hustle those more talented guys from out of state, thereby not having to take heat from the locals. Notice is taken that you don’t predict a Vol victory which is to your credit, since to do so might, as the saying goes, you might be letting “your alligator mouth overload your jaybird ass”.

  2. Who has UT taken out of The City of Memphis lately, other than that White Station Super Honkey, Dane Bradshaw?

  6. It’s going to be the premier game of the year – better than Duke-UNC. Both teams mirror one another, although the Tigers are a little more athletic than the Vols. The Vols however, have played a great schedule and will be more than ready. I am a bit concerned about the Vols recent performances on the road. If that’s any indication, Memphis will roll.
