He would have been the backup catcher to Brian McCann anyway. In spite of past injuries, age, and the fact that he hit .182 this spring, the only reason I could see keeping him would be clinging to what he did for the Braves in his prime and not letting go of the past instead of moving forward.

I’m more worried about how Smoltz, Glavine, and the always fragile Glassman Mike Hampton are going to hold up throughout the season. On yesterday’s game against the Astros, Smoltz discussed his sore shoulder as he broke down the mechanics of Hampton’s delivery (ouch! a kneecap waiting to separate).

 It must really suck to be a Kentucky fan right now.  With WKU and Louisville in the Sweet 16, and the Wildcats are watching it on TV. This one will stick in their craw for a long time.
