SEC Power Poll (Coaches Edition)

This is part of the much larger SEC Power Poll that will be published among SEC Blogs throughout the season. For the pre-season, we were asked to rate coaches vice teams. I was going to use the Rocky Top Talk logic of ranking only coaches that have won a National Championship over those who have not won a National Championship (including those who bitch about not getting to play in the BCS NC w/o winning their division). I think that Sly Croom kicks ass for some unexplainable reason. Then I move on to the NC proven coaches.

Also for shits and grins here is the Stewart Mandel Podcast that discusses the best SEC Coaches.  Listen to the comments at the 6 minute mark [Podcast].  Double click the pic below to see my rankings.

  1. [...] Coverage – Pete Carroll playing the piano. Machochip – Tiger Woods walks on water. Loser With Socks – SEC power poll. Tasty Booze – Vintage Chuck Norris tees. Hottest Girls of Myspace – This girl is [...]

  2. Croom is a dim bulb.

  3. He is smarter than Saban

  4. my list:

1)Miles: 34-6 in three years with two SECCG appearances, 1 SEC C-ship, one Nat’l C-Ship; and three blow-out romps in three bowl appearances–two of which were BCS bowls. Yeah, keep thinking he’s dumb.

2)Phullmer–he is the dean and you don’t see that kind of longevity

    3) Tubberfield–as much as i hate to admit it

    4) Croom (he should be in the race to determine Bammer’s daddy)

    5) Ol Ball Sack

    6-t)Saban–he is very good at organizational stuff, but aside from the Nat’l C-ship season, never had less than 3 losses/yr;

    6-t)Herban–won the Nat’l C-ship with Zook’s players

    8) Richt who i can’t stand

    9) Nutt who may just bring ole miss to a SECCG, as he did with R-kansas

    10) Vandy coach whatshisname whogivesashit

    11) Brooks–that is an old dude

    12) Petrino. fuck him.

  5. Damn right — Glad I’m not the only one who thinks Croom deserves to be at the front…

  6. Fear the Hat:

Funny how you say that Urban won with Zook’s players, yet it’s ok for Miles to win with some of Saban’s?

For what it’s worth, UF would have NEVER had won the NC in 2006 had it not been for Tebow, Harvin, and Ryan Smith. All 3 of who played major roles in key plays in big games that we would have otherwise lost (i.e. Tebow picking up that 4th down at UT, accounting for all of our TDs in the LSU game; Harvin in the FSU game and MVP of the SECCG; Ryan Smith leading the team with 8 INTs).

And all 3 were recruited by Meyer.

  7. They beat OSU’s ass, that is the common theme. Let’s all pray that OSU makes the NC again.

  8. How can anyone rank Fulmer over Spurrier? SPURRIER BEAT TENNESSEE AT TENNESSEE WITH USC. He beat UF with USC. Stupid fucking hillbillies listing Fulmer as the best coach. The List as it should appear:
    1. Spurrier
    2. Saban
    3. Meyer
    (tie)4. Tubberville
    4. Fulmer
    5. Miles

  9. Well I guess it’s time to create my own list:

1 – Meyer – Am I biased? Sure, why not.
2 (tie) – Tubbs – Longevity and consistency are the keys here.
2 (tie) – Richt – See above statement.
    4 – Miles – Ron Zook’s cousin?
    5 – Saban – Bama Cheats.
6 (tie) – Fulmer – Would have topped the list a decade ago.
6 (tie) – Spurrier – See above statement.
8 – Croom – Hard to dislike the guy (unless you’re an Ole Miss fan).
9 – Nutt – Ole Miss will be the surprise team of 2008 in the SEC.
10 – Brooks – He won at Kentucky.
11 – Vandy coach – If Jay Cutler could have had 2-3 more years of eligiblity, they could have been winners.
12 – Petrino – I feel bad for Hog fans. They have a dick for a head coach. I think everyone wants to see him fail.

  10. How can anyone put Mark Richt in the top 5? He is Bobby Bowden Jr without the NCs. You do realize it has been over 25 years since UGA won their last NC?

  11. He has 2 SEC championships under his belt which is more than any other current SEC coach aside from Spurrier (tied with Fulmer and Saban). They have been consistantly good during his tenure.

He has ties to Thug-U and F$U, so I hate to admit it, but he is a good coach.

  13. @6 it was really tounge in cheek. lots of guys (mainly of the crimson-necked, bahr-worshiping variety) and that fat fuck Chris Low like to say that Miles won the NC with Saban’s players (all of whom would have been freshmen or redshirt freshmen during Saban’s last year) but never say the same thing about that genius Herban.

@9–why are you comparing Miles to the Zooker?

  14. They just remind me of one another, I guess it’s just some of their mannerisms. It’s not a knock on either one.

  15. Fear the Hat:

I gotcha. All-in-all, and I think you’ll agree, you can recruit the best players, but if you can’t “coach” them, what good does it do? Plus, I don’t know the specifics, but I’m willing to bet that if it wasn’t for a couple of Miles’ recruits coming through in the clutch for LSU last year, they wouldn’t have won the NC. Similar to what I mentioned in reference to some of Meyer’s recruits in my earlier post.

    Jim Bob:

I can agree with that. Some of Miles’ mannerisms and quotes are similar to Zook. On the other hand, Miles’ “ballsy” calls always seem to work out for him, as that was not the case with Zook.

  16. @15–true dat. Meyer took Fla to places Zooker couldn’t; likewise, Miles did more with “Saban’s recruits” than Saban did. it was also fun watching a Miles recruit (Chad Jones) knock the piss out of SJJPW near the end of the bammer game causing a fumble.

i guess i never paid close enough attention to Zook to notice the resemblence to Miles. All i know is that Zook was in an impossible situation when he took over from Spurrier.

an aside: i seriously doubt Miles will making as many “ballsy” calls this year.
