Here are Lou’s Locks:
Now that’s what I am talking about ……..Not a bad way to start the season going 3-0 in the first week. Let’s see if we can keep it rolling throughout the year. Not a very interesting card this week with a ton of “who cares” type games on tap. However, these early season games that are not on everyone’s radar can provide some value. Several games I really like this week. Before we get to the Locks, a little recap from last week is in order.
U$C looks to be very strong again this year (one of last week’s Locks) as they traveled to the East Coast and demolished UVA. They have weapons everywhere and a D that is 2nd to none. Can’t wait for next week’s tilt with O$U that should have BCS implications.
Hats off to Bama who looked in mid-season form in “rolling” against Clemson. Pure and simple it was a coaching mismatch. UGA continues to be bitten by the injury bug as they lose DT C. Weston for the year. Will the schedule and these injuries catch up to them? Ok. St. (another one of the Locks last week) looked really good in their opener as well. Very balanced O and an improved D makes for a very interesting Big 12 race this year (Okla., Tex, Mizzou, TTech and Kan all are very good teams). Nice win for E Car as they “Beamered” Va Tech …. the Pirates have some players and should win C-USA. Very disappointing evening on Monday for my boys (the Vols) as they laid an egg on the West Coast …. enough mistakes to fill a season.
Kudos to Jessie “The bachelor” Palmer as he donned a new tie last night that actually reached to his belt buckle. He must have read last week’s edition and decided to straighten up his act. More importantly from last night, kudos to the ‘Dores as they finally got some breaks and defeated So Car. I think it will not be long before the Ol’ Ball Coach takes his “ball plays” and hangs it up. Look for Skip Holtz to come to So Car. Speaking of Holtz …..what on God’s green earth is ESPN thinking with its “Ask Dr. Lou” segment? Horrific, putrid, asinine …… it may be the worst sports segments/shows ever. Only rivaled by everyone’s all time favorites “Battle of the Network Super Stars” and the annual 6th grade spelling bee. Now onto the Locks……
1. T TECH-10 @ NEVADA The Red Raiders return 18 starters (10 on O and 8 on D) this year. Already a prolific offensive team, T Tech should be mightily improved on D this year. This is HC M. Leach’s beat team at T Tech led by QB G. Harrell and WR. M. Crabtree. T Tech rolled to 693 total yds (536 passing) last week against E. Wash and will look to take this high wire act on the road to finally play a decent OOC opponent. Nevada is not too shabby on O either led by QB C. Kaepernick and RB L. Lippincott running out of the “pistol” O. Nevada had 629 yds. total offense (426 rushing) against Grambling. So there will be a contrast in styles in this game. Look for lots of O in this game, but I think that T Tech has the decided advantage on D and should take care of business. Also, T Tech is 10-3 ATS in last 13 when favored by 8 or more. T TECH 55 NEV 31
2. KANSAS -20.5 v. LA TECH Going back to one of my horses from last year in the Jayhawks as they were a covering machine in ’07. Although they failed to cover the 36 point spread last week (40-10 win over Fl. Int.), Kansas tried to score from the 6 yd line at the end of the game. So that tells you HC M. Mangino either has some boys that need to cover or he just likes to keep scoring points. Either way you gotta like it as a Jayhawk backer. La Tech may be in for a little let down after the huge upset of Miss. St. last week, but more importantly, the Bulldogs lost WAC Defensive MVP from last year LB Q. Harris with a broken hand. Harris is the heart and soul of the Bulldog D, and they will miss him in this one. Kansas has a high powered O led by QB T. Reesing and also returns 9 starters from last year’s under rated D. With talk of last year being a fluke, I can see Big Boy Mangino wanting to take it out on someone, that someone will be La Tech. KAN 45 LA TECH 13
3. SO FLA -14 @ UCF I usually avoid laying double digits on the road in a rivalry game, but I cannot see this game being close. The Bulls absolutely destroyed Cent. Fla. last year (64-12) and the Knights had one of the best Rbs in the nation in K. Smith. Smith is now in the NFL and they lost their QB from last year. The Bulls return 17 starters (10 on O and 7 on D) and are led by QB M. Grothe, RB M. Ford and WRs T. Johnson, J. Hester and C. Mitchell. On D, S. Fla. returns sack man DE G. Selvie and All Big East LB T. McKenzie. Cent. Fl. had a lackluster game last week and beat So Car St (17-0) where new QB M. Grecco went 9/16 for 90 yds. I just do not see this one being close at all. South Florida does have a big game next week against Kansas, but the rivalry nature of the game will keep their focus on the Knights. SFLA 40 CFLA 10
OTHER GAMES I LIKE BUT DID NOT MAKE THE CUT:
NW -6.5
ECAR +7.5
FLA/MIA OVER 51.5
UGA -24
OK ST -15.5
OLE MISS +8
ARIZ. ST -14
TEXAS -26
