Battle Captain Video
Via email. These guys did this last year after the Alabama game and were waiting for the straw that broke the Battle Captain’s broad but sweaty back to release it…obviously providence our beloved Vols went on a three game run as hisĀ quest for the contract roll-over continues in earnest against uab…
and then there was this beauty (also by email) by a commenter named Robert at Gridscape:
Getting to 8 wins is very important for our program now because, if memory serves, that is the benchmark that Mike Hamilton established for the automatic rollover of Coach Fulmer’s contract. In other words, if we win 8 games, I believe Coach Fulmer’s contract automatically rolls over for an additional year, whereas if we don’t, then there is no automatic rollover of the contract this year. So as long as the program produces 8 wins a year, the benchmark established by our Athletics Department has been met.
Here’s how I see it: I think we will all three of our remaining nonconference games (they are all at home) against UAB, Northern Illinois, and Wyoming.
I think we can beat USC, Vandy, Miss. State, and Kentucky. Maybe not wallop them, but I think we can beat them.
Out of Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and Bama, I think we can rise up and beat at least one of them. But even if we don’t, we should still be bowl-eligible at 7-5, and we would probably have an easier bowl opponent with a 7-5 record than with an 8-4 record, so maybe we can win the bowl game too, which would put us at 8-5. Whereas if we go 8-4, we would probably go to a better bowl game and draw a tougher opponent, and would probably lose, putting us at 8-5 again.
Now, admittedly, there isn’t much margin for error in this calculation, but I think 8-5 is a reasonable goal for this year’s team, with a bowl game (maybe we will finally get to play in the Music City Bowl this year!). I assume that record would be acceptable to most people on here, as it obviously is to the UT Athletic Department.
