Point/Counterpoint with an Ignorant Bammeroid
One of our readers sent this email exchange with Birmingham Sports *writer* Ray Me-lick. Here is the confused Bammeroid’s newspaper story [link].

I am still trying to contain my laughter after having read your article in this morning’s B’ham News. As Shakespeare said “Me thinks thou dost protest too much….” It is hilarious to me that all the Bama homers (including yourself) are just now talking about the insane amount of money being spent on college football coaches. Why? Because the hated rival, Tennessee, lured one of your top recruiters away. Not one word from the homers about the unprecedented $4 mill. salary of HC Nick Saban, other than it is money well spent. Now that Tennessee and HC Lane Kiffin has put together one of, if not the, best staffs in the SEC, it is time to examine the crazy amount of money being spent for college football coaches. Is someone a little frightened? Yes, I think so.
It is also interesting to me that even after UT has spent money to get an incredible coaching staff, the entire coaching budget will be well under Bama’s. But, hey, no need to mention that either. Let’s not let the facts get in the way of a good story for the homers here.
The swipe at Lane being a spoiled kid, was amateurish at best. Now that Bama’s favorite punching bag , Phillip Fulmer, is gone, we need something to replace the Fat Phil jokes, huh? I think Lane Kiffin deserves credit for going out and getting the best recruiters he could find to fill out his staff, most of which are very good position coaches as well. Also, by suggesting in your article that Monte Kiffin will be running the coaches meetings and is totally in charge in Knoxville, just shows your own ignorance of how coaching meetings are run. Monte Kiffin is a defensive coach (i.e. Defensive coordinator) and he will be in charge of the defensive coaches meetings. Lane Kiffin is an offensive coach (HC who will call offensive plays) and will be in charge of the offensive coaches meetings. What this allows Lane Kiffin to do is to focus completely on offense knowing that the best defensive mind in the last 4 decades is running the defense ….. not a bad situation if you ask me. But, hey, I understand pandering to your audience. It would have been easier and much more credible if you would have just said “Nothing sucks like a Big Orange!” I am just glad that the Big Orange is back on the radar. Be afraid, be very afraid.

Thanks for reading, and I was glad to provide you with a morning laugh.
Of course, I did point out that Alabama is the one who raised the bar on this economic explosion of coaching salaries. It’s likely to be passed now by Tennessee, but that’s the cost of doing business.
What I really found funny, however, was how everyone wants to work at Tennessee to be around Monte Kiffin. It’s like lane Kiffin doesn’t exist.
But then, if I were Donald Trump’s son, or Bill Gates’ son, I’d use my Dad for every advantage I could get too, I suppose.
At the end of the day, what I think or what you say doesn’t really matter. It’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun. They play it, we enjoy it, and then talk about what happened.
