This is a behind the scenes view into what happened with the rivals ranking. Yes I know the family…
The two main guys from Rivals that rank the kids are based on the east coast. They saw Jake one time at the Army All American combine in San Antonio where Jake got off to a slow start having not picked up a ball since his state championship a about month previous. That performance and his size are the contributing factors for thier ranking strangely NOT his body of work. (Jake’s is in the mold of a Drew Bree’s Mark Bulger Steve Young as far as size goes so he is not going to blow you away with his stature when you meet him) But on the field he plays as big as any other guy you’ll meet. Rivals own west coast affiliates are crying foul on the ranking with their east coast partners…
Matt Barkley last years #1 QB did not throw at that the Army All American combine for concern that the same thing could happen to him… a lowering of his rating based on one performance in an uncontrolled setting… in the end Barkley switched to the Under Armour Game… Combines like the Army All American are a free for all… it is not filled with all d-1 talent like you might imagine… Jake was not suppose to throw at the event and was at the last minute persuaded to do so. In retrospect he should have stood his ground. The family is taking a live and learn attitude on this one…
The West Coast Rivals guys have contacted the Heaps apologizing for their companies unfair rating and have emailed their disgust and frustration to their home office. But in their own words they have very little pull as Rivals is a east coast based company.
Jake is not expected to be on ESPN’s top 150 list either as that has become a showcase for the kids that are attending their Under Armour game in Florida. ESPN/Under Armour was unsuccessful in getting the Heaps to date to switch to their game as he had already committed to the Army All American Game back in September of last year. Through channels ESPN let the Heaps know that they could expect Jake not to be in their top 50 due to his refusal to switch games. The Heaps are standing their ground refusing to be bullied…
The family is taking all of this in stride… from what I understand Jake spoke to several big time coaches yesterday that contacted him to make sure that he knew that they thought the Rivals thing proved how little the Rivals guys know about football. Heck Nick Saban personally offered Jake a Scholarship last night and laughed off the ranking slight.
As far as how did Jake do this weekend at the Vegas 7 on 7 all you have to do is read the articles from the SCOUT writers who were actually at the event. Jake unequivocally had a great weekend…

You hit the nail on the head. All he had to do was express some interest in the T-Town Ghetto and the “unbiased” ratings at Rivals would have become, miraculously, much better.

Vols, Bitch
Hey UT. Get a commit from a recruit half as good as any of our last three (Sims, McCarron, Jackson) and then come making up poinless articles about players you have a 10% chance of signing. Thanks in advance for any comments directed towards Star Jackson. That would indicate you have been nervously monitoring Alabama spring practice (in addition to your well-documented florida inferiority complex) in hopes the program will somehow miraculously crumble to bits. Not only that, but you are most likely going to try to find some stats that can back up your hypothesis that Alabama’s 3rd string qb just isn’t quite ready to start yet in his Redshirt Freshman season. How is that stud recruit Crompton panning out? Really?
Kiffin reminds me of this guy.
This is what happens to guys like that.
Hopefully for you, Coach Meyer and Saban are a little more merciful on your punk-ass coach, for the sake of the kids.
As a parent of Division I prospect (my son has verbally committed), I can’t believe what I’m reading.
Who cares about the rankings? Will Heaps’s parents complain too when his college team isn’t ranked high enough by the BCS?
Get over it. Rankings are for fans (read: fanaticals), not for players.
It’s unreal how so many parents get too involved with their children. Enjoy your son’s successes, but get over yourselves.
