‘Bama’s secret coach-in-waiting?
There’s some speculation that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is the Crimson Tide’s secret coach-in-waiting. Of course, it’s hard to believe since most believe 58-year-old coach Nick Saban has several more years left in the tank. But Smart’s future is the subject of much interest nowadays, since he was essentially given $750,000 of “ransom money” to keep him there, the Birmingham Press-Register writes.
If we assume Smart is the coach-in-waiting, it makes sense that it is a secret. The only thing good that comes out of publicly naming this position is that it increases the chances that the coach-in-waiting will stick around to fulfill his destined role. But with the NCAA recently passing a rule that places the same recruiting restrictions on coaches-in-waiting as the current coach, it severely limits the talent these guys can bring in.
But all that is unlikely for Alabama. What is more likely, however, is that Smart will leave for another top SEC job — maybe in Georgia, where Mark Richt’s ship looks like it might be crumbling.
