The Final Results from the Tennessee Sports Media “Best in the Biz, none Better”

Last week,  we ran a series of polls ( Poll: Tennessee Sports Media, Vote for the “best in the biz, none better”) that attempted to get after who was the most angry, despicable, tasteless and disgusting Tennessee Media Dick and in contrast who is the best in covering Tennessee athletics.

Before you jump in, read this gem from Volquest (HT Jon) via email.

“It’s pretty much the same,” Dantzler said. “I got offered by Eastern Carolina today. Not that it really matters. I got letter from Lee High in Pennsylvania. It’s just kinda funny to get random ones. I just toss them out. I had like 15 questionnaires to fill out so I gave them to my teammate so he might get recruited.” Lee High? Only at Volquest.

Below are the questions and final results.  Also I reveal how I voted on each poll.

Misses Fulmer the most? Lost relevance when the Battle Captain “quit”. He is mailing it in.

Surprise winner here, Jimmy Hyams wins by a landslide. The Typhoid Mary of the Vols media  He came onto the scene, infected all his readers with faux attitude and soon wiped out all traces of competence at the Knoxville  Sports media scene. And now, the living envy the dead.

Jimmy Hyams at 75%
Brent Hubbs at 8%

LWS vote?  Hubbs

Can’t possibly scoop a Tennessee Vols story much less even an ice cream cone?

Hyams isn’t the surprise, Basilio at number two is the biggest surprise.  Hyams (or Hubbs IMO) has never met an athlete or a story  whom he could scoop. I would love to see Jimmy  in gladiator-style combat versus Hubbs, only with Jimmy handcuffed and beaten first. Or vice versa….

Jimmy Hyams at 58%

Tony Basilio at 12%

Who goes the extra mile for their readers? Responsive Chats, tweets etc?

Wes Rucker is an equal-opportunity Reaper, beckoning all but the most strong-willed Vols fans with his skeletal finger poised over tweet-deck, slowly but efficiently filling hearts with straight-up vols news.  Displaying total  disdain until they unwittingly find themselves face to face with Charon. And without a coin

Wes Rucker at 71%
Basilio at 11%

Who only “confirms” breaking news what other media outlets have scooped? Using “integrity” as a crutch .

Both are literally scared of their own shadows.  Refusing to seize that rare opportunity of breaking news’ for fear of being wrong. Or jizzing their britches?

Hubbs is the sand that initially irritated the oyster that is Rivals; Hyams is the festering pearl that has developed by allowing the sportscasters to develop schticks and personalities that take away from the reason why we watch Tennessee  in the first place, to get relevant and timely Tennessee sports information.

Hubbs to his credit at least likes sports; Hyams is hate incarnate, a shrilled man-woman elf thing that takes the devil’s advocate because he is the DEVIL.

Hyams 49%

Hubbs 26%

LWS vote? Hubbs

Writes with an “angry” and pissed off passion; seems to hate his readership?

This was closer than I expected.   Rob Lewis built an early lead, fueled by his hate of all readers.  He fought off Typhoid Mary and wins as expected!!  Good job Rob!!!

Rob Lewis is son of the devil’s spawn. He is an individual who would sell his mother to permaban a longtime subscriber. He would strap his children to the front end of a steam locomotive”.  I hate the way his head bobs around and his eyes bug open when he types. I hate his writing. I hate his moronic opinions on everything that can be so stupid they make you wonder if his feeble mind is even capable of the slightest bit of the thought process found in a normal human. I hate that he is an arrogant a-hole about his idiotic opinions.

Lewis actually sent me an email that said “take that shit down or get out of town”.  He seems to genuinely hate his job.

Lewis 22%
Hyams 21%
Baslio 18%

LWS vote? Lewis

Avoids answering questions from readers for fear they may be wrong?

Winner here is was a no-brainer:  Brent Hubbs.  Questions to Hubbs, never got any responses, I tried bashing him. No dice. I’ve since stopped trying to reason, since Rivals probably has several staff dedicated to deleting Hubbs’  email, fellating his ego, and turning off his tanning bed. Ok, maybe they need to hire another person to cover that tanning bed.

Hubbs 41 %
Basilio 17 %

LWS vote? Hubbs

Doesn’t know the difference between “your” and “you’re”

Brent Hubbs gets my vote. His Milquetoast and weekly rehash of  the  “war room” personally drove me away from reading Rivals and getting my Tennessee Vols news from the internet. If he ever metastasizes into Baseball Tonight I will only be able to watch select actual sporting events on ESPN.

Brent Hubbs  35%

Tony Basilio 26%

Rob Lewis    18%

LWS vote? hubbs

Consistently has the best sources on Vol news?

There’s are times I actually like Hubbs  but that has to be less than 1% of the time. Rucker is a good #1 seed, love to see him slug it out with the likes of Basilio and Hubbs for the top spot.   Since Fulmer left, it seems that the “old guard” was left out in the cold.  Dooley doesn’t seem to care if the media has access or not.  I would venture that some the guys on the poll just quit and resorted to making shit up after reader Wes Rucker’s tweets.

Wes Rucker  35%

Brent Hubbs  32%

Tony Basilio  16%

Best in the biz, none is better?

  1. Someone writing an article dedicated to bashing other writers should make sure that article is readable. I stopped at least two dozen times, having to reset my mind after sorting through the misplaced commas, bad analogies and nonsensical, hate inspired hard-ons for Hubbs and Hyams.

  2. Russell I know that you can’t be Hubbs or Hyams, as they would recognize this as a well written blog post. A blog post that is written by a some dude in his basement that doesn’t get paid a journalist salary.

    So Russell, tongue my balls

  3. The above post, again, makes no sense. It’s littered with the same stupidity of the entire blog post. You are obviously the author of this trash.

“A blog post that is written by a some dude in his basement that doesn’t get paid a journalist salary.”

That is not a complete sentence. I am not even sure if it registers as a thought. Being “some dude” doesn’t excuse you from making an absolute mess of the English language and subsequently making my head hurt.

Please remove your hand from underneath your whitey-tighties. Put on some pants, walk up the basement stairs and ask your mother to write a letter to Hyams or Hubbs or Rucker. Beg them to teach you how to write so you can tell us how much you wish you were them without making our heads hurt. Thank you.

  4. Hilarious. Russell might be part of the Rivals network, deleting Brent Hubbs’ email?

  5. Nothing like a pompous ass making blog comment critiques. Do you attend title IX rallies too?

  6. No Russell (or Rob Lewis) it is not me.

  8. Nice work Jai. Indepth, critical, and compelling.

  9. comma challenged. the lighting in the basement is out

  10. This is a sample of Hubbs/Volquest fail.

It’s been a really quiet week on the football front. Players have been enjoying time away from campus. It’s been two months of adjusting for the players and they really embraced spring break and the week off. Some went home, some went to the beach, some went to the beach in a different country and some went on a cruise. Very, very few stayed around town. They were encouraged to enjoy the week off and told to be ready to get to work next week when they return.

Derek Dooley actually moved spring practice back a bit because he didn’t want the 15 days of work to be broken up with a week off for spring break. He didn’t think it would be good for the focus of his team. So as they return it’s all about football and the classroom. There’s no looking ahead to a week off or a week’s vacation.

As they return and move to the practice field, there are some that everyone is interested in seeing in pads and on the field. And a couple of them are mid-term enrollees. Obviously, there is some curiosity with all of the new players, but a couple that have grabbed the attention of many has been speedster Ted Meline. Meline has impressed in workouts and in seven on seven work. The question is can play in pads when the game gets physical.

Another guy on offense that some feel can and has to be a real contributor this fall is freshman Jawuan James. James has shown a lot of maturity and physically doesn’t look as if he is far behind. You can’t say he is “ready” but he is not a guy that you look at physically and say he needs a year in the weight room before he is candidate for playing time. James will get plenty of opportunities early in spring practice.

Once spring practice gets started some things will change. The intensity will obviously increase and the relationship with coaches and players will change. To this point, it’s been a feeling out process and a get to know each other type of mindset/relationship. It changes once they go to the practice field and the coaches will certainly play close attention to who is buying in and who is not. There have been plenty of rumors about various players like a Bryce Brown. And so there will be eyes on several guys to see just how much they are buying in or are willing to buy in this spring.

Of course there will be several guys limited due to injury or surgery. Denarius Moore should however be able to do some things after being on crutches for the bulk of the winter. Of course at linebacker Tennessee will be without Savion Frazier and the coaching staff doesn’t have any plans to work Nick Reveiz this spring. Although physically, Reveiz could work some. And we would expect Aaron Douglas to be limited a good bit and maybe being held from some practices early with his nagging ankle injury. An injury that he suffered before the bowl game and was hurting a lot against Virginia Tech. It would not be surprising if Douglas doesn’t end up seeing a specialist regarding the injury.

Dooley will address the media on Wednesday where it wouldn’t be surprising to see or hear of another position move or two. There have been some quiet rumblings about a receiver potentially moving to the defensive side of the ball. We don’t know if that is true and we don’t know who, other than that it’s not Marsalis Teague. We will see Wednesday if there is any kind of position move there.

We will also learn more about what Dooley’s practice policy is going to be media wise. Last year, the entire practices in spring were open under Kiffin. Under Fulmer, all scrimmages were open, but practices were closed after 30 minutes. What Dooley’s policy is going to be isn’t known, but they are not expected to be fully open.

While Dooley and some players are visiting with the media on Wednesday, the former Vols will be working in the complex in front of the NFL scouts. It’s obviously a huge day for quarterback Jonathan Crompton as there will be a lot of NFL personnel there to watch. And it’s his once chance to workout in front all teams.

Those who did get to go to the NFL combine all helped themselves. And not just physically but in their sit downs with NFL team executives. Dan Williams drew rave reviews from NFL scouts that sat down with the very humble Memphis native. Much of the same was said about Montario Hardesty as well. Safety Eric Berry wowed teams with his knowledge and understanding of playing the safety position in different defensive systems, but particularly in the Tampa 2, prompting one NFL team to suggest that Berry is as impressive as any player they have visited with at the combine in terms of being prepared to play his position at the next level.

After the draft in April, look for Berry to make off the field news as the Georgia native has visions of setting up youth programs and centers in his hometown and perhaps in Knoxville as well.

Back to current Vols and staff, it appears Tennessee is not going to get buyout money from Ed Orgeron because he was given the title of defensive coordinator at Southern Cal. In reading the contract, there doesn’t seem to be any specific writing that says Orgeron has to be calling plays to be considered a coordinator. So it doesn’t look like Tennessee will be getting that 325k dollars.

And speaking of contracts, Dooley still has not signed his deal at this point as the discussions continue over Dooley’s buyout if Dooley were to elect to leave on his own for another job.
