UPDATE: So it turns out that Matt Darr had been released from his letter of intent to Fresno State, leaving him free to sign with the Vols, which he did on Wednesday. He will enroll in time for Tennessee’s second summer session, which begins on July 8. Senior Chad Cunningham is the only other scholarship P on the roster, so Darr probably has the job sewn up for 2011.
We kid Dooley a lot about his recruiting efforts, but the fact is that he needs players for this fall, so how he gets them doesn’t matter as long as he does.

With Derek Dooley‘s Tennessee roster constantly in flux, it should come as no surprise that the program hosted recruit Matt Darr earlier in the week — except that Darr is a 2010 recruit who has not been released from his letter of intent with Fresno State.
Darr was ranked by one service as the top P in the class of 2010, but Scouts, Inc., had him at No. 11 on its combined list of P’s and K’s. He originally committed to USC but signed with Fresno after Pete Carroll left. Then Fresno special teams coach John Baxter jumped ship — for USC, of all places.
Now the Vols have come calling, as they continue to go after guys previous regimes might not have considered. Somebody has to take those 85 scholarships, right?
RAY GUY AWARD – TO HONOR NATIONS TOP COLLEGIATE PUNTER
The Greater Augusta Sports Council announced today that Derrick Dooley, head coach of the University of Tennessee, has been nominated as a candidate for the coveted “Ray Guy Collegiate Punter Award”.
In an unusual move, The Greater Augusta Sports Council announced voted to amend their charter in order to allow players and coaches to be eligible for their award. When asked about the change a spokesman for the board responded,
“We feel that there should be opportunities for coaches and players to be honored for their contributions in promoting, and elevating the importance of the punter position in college football.”
Sources close to the The Greater Augusta Sports Council have said privately that Coach Derrick Dooley can be expected to be extraordinary in his decisions to put his kickers in the spotlight of nationally televised SEC conference games.
Besides, Dooley knows it would be embarrassing to the University of Tennessee to be stuffed on a 4th and 1 by the Bama. They might go make a painting and call it “the goal line stand” or something, and that cannot be. So we can anticipate that he will avoid all that and punt the ball.
He will set up the enemies of Tennessee by letting them all think they are better, then next year he will unleash a top five attack that can only be described as number one! he will dominate all of the winners this year at home in Knoxville next year and my Vols will be back!!
