Neyland was great, no doubt. He had a stretch at the beginning of his career where he went like 5 years with one loss. TOTAL. As in one loss in 5 seasons.
There was AP poll in 1950 to pick the best college coach of the first half of the 20th century. Neyland was second behond Knute Rockne.
To be fair though, Neyland had a huge advntage over Bryant when they played. Bryant was only in his 30s AND at Ky (and he did win bigger at Ky than any other coach); he was certainly not at the peak of his powers before he was even 40 years old and he was at a bad football job. Neyland had been UT coach for 20 years and had one of the best programs in the country.
