Akron Catching Five TDs In Rocky Top
By SBRForum.com
At this point, should the Tennessee Volunteers be laying 34 ½-points on the college football odds to any team in the nation? The Akron Zips are coming to Rocky Top this weekend, and they’re coming with everything in the world to prove but with zero expectations.
Give Head Coach Terry Bowden a lot of credit for the way that he has handled his Zips this year. Yes, they were blown away by the UCF Knights in the opener, but since that point, they stuck with the Florida International Golden Panthers on the road and arguably should have won the game in overtime, and they blew away the Morgan State Bears. Of course, this isn’t a game that Akron is winning by any stretch of the imagination, but it is difficult to make the case to lay the five TDs with Tennessee as well.
It’s going to be difficult to gauge how the Volunteers will come out and play this one. They were absolutely taken behind the shed in the second half against Florida last Saturday night at home, and all of a sudden, what went from a city that was buzzing with the prospects of an SEC East crown, now has turned back into all of the questions about when, and not if, Head Coach Derek Dooley is getting fired.
Akron and Tennessee have only met once in relatively recent memory, and that came back in 1989. The Vols won that game 52-9, but obviously, a heck of a lot has changed since that point.
Tennessee has covered five games in a row at home against teams with a losing record, and it is 4-1 ATS in its last five non-conference goes. Akron is just 4-11 ATS in its last 15 games against teams with a winning record, but it is that culture that Bowden is working on changing in his first year as the man in charge of the Zips.
