College Football Favorites: Can Anyone Stop SEC From Another BCS Title?
By SBRForum.com
The SEC has won six straight BCS National Championships and the odds makers are giving them a good shot to do it again. The USC Trojans will be back in the mix this season (after a two year bowl ban) and they are technically the co-favorites at 4-1 with the LSU Tigers, but the Tigers aren’t alone representing the SEC.
Taking a look at the teams in the running, there is Alabama (9/2), Arkansas (18/1) and Georgia (18/1) all of whom are near the top of the list of favorites. In other words, while the Trojans are a threat to the SEC, the SEC still has many more options should any of their teams stumble.
Even though the SEC has the winning streak on their side, you can expect the Trojans to be among more people’s college football picks to be the champ this season. They’re a glamorous team led by quarterback Matt Barkley, who is the Heisman Trophy frontrunner heading into the season. Beyond him, the team has arguably the best running backs and wide receivers in the nation, which means their offense will be quite fluid.
But the reason why many are picking USC to end the SEC’s run is because the Trojans – at least in the past – have been one of the few teams that has proven to be able to match the SEC’s speed on defense.
If not the Trojans, the odds makers have a few other teams near the top of the odds that are expected to challenge them for a BCS title. The Oregon Ducks, who have won the Pac 12 three years in a row, sit at 12-1, the Oklahoma Sooners are at 10-1 and the Florida State Seminoles are at 15-1.
All of the action gets underway on Thursday, August 30th.
